APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 3, 1912.

FRANK W. BURTON, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
ORNAMEN'IAL CAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. It}, 1913.
Application filed September 3, 1912. Serial No. 718,271.
1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK WV. BURTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, haveinvented certain new and-useful Improvements in Ornamental Caps, of which the following is a specificat-ion.
This invention relates to caps for covering the heads of screws, nails, bolts, and similar fastening means, and some of the oljects of my improvement are, simplicity of construction, facility of use. and comparative inexpensiveness of manufacture. These and other objects I attain by means of the device illustrated in theaccompanymg drawings, in which Figure 1 1s a top plan View 111 pyramidal form; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; F 1g. 3, a central vertical section of the same;
Fig. 4, a top plan view of spherical form,
Fig. 5, a side elevation of the same; Fig. (3, a top plan view of conical form; Fig. 7. a side elevation of the same; Fig. 8, a top plan view of the plate or washer, of square form; Fig. 9, the same, of circular form; and, Fig. 10, a bottom plan view of the pyramidal form.
Similar reference numbers refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
The cap, 1, is made in some ornamental shape, such as pyramidal, hemispherical,
' tenlng means (Fig. 3).
conical, etc., and is referably stamped from sheet metal. The ase perimeter is planed oif so that the outer surface'of the cap extends downward to the surface of the object upon which it is applied, as shown at 2. On
, the base perimeter, and preferably integral,
are formed centripetally extending tongues, 3. The inner edge of these tongues is beveled, as shown at 4.
A flat plate, 5, is provided, of the shape of the base of its correspoinling cap and adapted to tit into the base of cap 1 and form a bottom therefor, so that the under surface of the plate is tlush with the bottom edge of the cap. The plate is formed with a central hole, (5, by which it is fastened to an object to which it is to be applied, being used after the manner of a washer or bur for a bolt, nail or screw, 7, or similar fas- At the perimeter the plate 5 is formed with upward-extending catches, 8. The catches 8 are so formed Itwill be understood that in thus snap- I ping over the .catch the wall of the cap 1 springs outward sufliciently to' permit the tongue 3 to pass catch 8 and then springs in under the catch. The cap is now securely held by the plate 5 by means which are hidden within itself. The cap may be removed at any time by' prizing it up with a sharpedged instrument inserted between its edge and the surface of its support.
It will now be seen that the invention may be made in ornamental form, maybe cheaply manufactured, and may be easily applied in use. Having thus described my invention so that any one skilled in the art pertaining 1 thereto may make and use it, I claim z- 1. A cap for screws, nails, and the like, comprising a washer held securely under the head of a screw, nail, or like fastening means, said washer provided with catch members on its perimeter, and an ornamental cap provided with tongues at its base extending toward the center to serve as catch members to catch on said catch membcrs formed on said washer.
2. A cap, comprising a plate, formed with a central hole to receive a bolt or similar fastening means and up-turned catch members on its erimeter, and a cap adapted to fit over said plate and integral tongues on its perimeter, extending toward'the center, adapted to catch over and hold said cap on said plate when pressed thereon.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK W. BURTON \Vitnesses ELMER E. RODABAUGH, J AMES M. Powers.
