FRIED SGHUMANIT, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SCREW-LOCK AND SLOT-FILLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 24, 191a Serial No. erases.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED SCHUMANlN, a
citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screw-Lock and Slot-Filler, of which the following is a specification.
My presentjnvention relates to an improvement in slot-fillers for screws and the like wherein the head thereof is slotted and more especially relates to use in conjunction with wood screwsof the well known yp In some uses to which screws are put, the slot. is usually necessary for the insertion of a screwdriver or like tool for applying the screw. This slotted head is rather unsightly especially where slotted head screws only are utilized forholding ornamental panels and the like.
The important advantage of my device is that after the screw has been applied, the filler may be driven into the slot thereof, thereby filling the slot and making the screw fastemn means of a more sightly appearance an at the same time making it very dificult to extract the screw thereafter.
Another important feature of my device is that it prevents the backing out of the screw by vibration, or through the shrinkage of the wood in which it may be placed owing to the action of the locking point on the filler as well as filling up the slot in such a manner as making difficult the removal by the customary screw-driver.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective transparent view of a screw-lock and slot-filler, as the same appears when in looking position, on the upper portion of a screw, of rounded or button-head form; Fig. 2 is a side view of the complete-screw and lock in locking position partially in section, one side of the head, shank, and slot being broken away; Fig. 3 is a top view in detail removed from the screw of the slotfiller and lock-member; and Fig. 4 is a like side-view thereof.
To form my improved screw-lock, etc, I take a screw of any suitablerordinary form, the shape of the head being immaterial, but in each case the slot-filler head is of such form as to fill completely, and fit snugly in the drive-slot of the screw-head. The screw shown herein is of what is commonly known as the rounded or buttonhead form of wood- screw 2, 2 Through this screw beginning at or adjacent to the center of the drive-slot of the screw-head, I drill diagonally downward and outward through the screw-shank 2, a bore hole 11, preferably,
but not necessarily, in the plane of the driveslot of the screw head 1, in which snugly fits the slot-filler disk 9 of the same exterior contour as the head having the diagonal preferably sharp-pointed securing prong 10 formed integral therewith, or firmly secured to the bottom plane face thereof angular to such bottom plane face, in such manner that when the slot-filler disk 9 is driven down into position in the drive-slot, such prong 10 will be forced down and out through the bore 11 in such manner as to lock the screw against rotation.
It is evident that many changes and modifications in the construction of my invention may be made without departing from the scope thereof; and'I do not intend to limit myself to, the exact construction shown.
I claim:
1. In combination with a screw having a screw-slot and an opening extending downwardly from the base of the screw-slot through the shank of the screw at an angle to the base of the screw-slot in the plane thereof; of a slot-filler having a disk member corresponding to the dimensions of the screw-slot to accurately fill the same; and a prong extending downwardly from said disk member at an angle thereto to extend through the inclined opening of said screwshank in the plane of the disk.
2. In combination with a screw having a screw-slot and an opening extending down wardly from the base of the screw-slot through the shank of the screw at an angle to the base of the screw-slot, of a slot-filler having a disk member corresponding to the dimensions of the screw-slot to accurately fill the same, and a prong extending downwardly from said disk member at an angle thereto to extend through the inclined opening of said screw-shank.
FRED SCHUMANN.
