SHET-ADJUSTING APPARATUS.
V Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4,1913.
Application led February 5, i910. Serial No.' 542,357'.
To @ZZ "107mm i may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES CARRUTHERS, a' subject of the King of England, residing 'in the borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Adjusting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompany? ing drawing. y My invention relates to improvements in sheet adjusting apparatus and is particuplication to an automatic playing piano.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated in Figure l in elevation, a pair of spools upon which the perforated sheet music of an automatic piano is fed over a suitable tracker board in combination with my automatic adjustment device. Fig.` 2 is a plan view of the tracker board with part broken away showing part of the sheet of music, F ig. 3 is a vertical cross section of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
4 is a suitable framework in which the spools and tracker board are mounted and 5 is the tracker board provided with the usual perforations adapted to register with the perforations in the sheet music 6.
7 is a pneumatic having movable partition 8 in communication with a suitable pneumatic which exhausts the chambers 9 and 10 through the same by the tube ll. lift-is a rod pivotally connected to said parx i1 ation 8 and Iastened to the tracker ooaru The tracker board is provided with .ing the slide members l3-l3 adapted to slide freely within the grooves lll-i4 and. held within the same by the springs l5-15. These slides are held normally in the position shown in the drawing by the springs 16-16 and are sullicient-ly farV apart to lightly engage the sides or outer edges of the perforated sheet 6.
the tracker board.' to the left side of the pneumatic and 1"." is a. similar tube connecting the valve on the right side of t-he tracker board with the right side of the pneumatic. From this it will be seen that if the sheet slides laterallyon the tracker board. so as to bring the perforations therein out of register with the perforations in the tracker board, the slide member in the direction in which the sheet moves, yields through the resiliency of its spring and the slide on the opposite side follows the sheet thereby eX- posing the tube such as 17 or 17 as the case may be, to the atmosphere, the result being that the air is drawn through said tube into one side of the pneumatic which thereupon shifts the partition 8 operating the rod l2 which shifts the tracker board until the perforations of the same register with the perforations in the sheet. It will be readily understood that when the sheet is running true the tubes l7-l7 are both equally covered and the pressure on either side of the partition 8 of the' pneumatic is equal, so that everything is perfectly balanced. As soon as the sheet shifts, however, vair is drawn into that side of the pneumatic opposite to the direction in which it shifts thereby causing the tracker board to follow the sheet until registry is restored.
Of course it will be understood that vaL l rions modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention .iis set forth in the claims..
Having described my invent-ion, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
ln an apparatus of the class described, a pneumatic, a tracker, a sheet adapted to pass over the surface of said' tracker, passageways through said tracker terminat` ing in ports, a reciprocating slide valve mounted for sliding movement longitudinally of said' tracker for opening and closing said ports, at each side of said sheet, guide-ways foreach of said valves, means for maintaining Contact between said slide valves and the opposite edges of said sheet,
said slide valves in the normal position of said sheet being in position te close said ports and one of sai ports being opened by one of saic slide valves by the ytransverse In testimony whereof I aiX my signature divergence of said sleet from itls norinal in presence of two Witnesses. A v position, connections etween sai assage- Wa' s and said pneumetic, and merms 'for l JAMES CARRUTHERS' 5 adJustng the relation between `said :"s'heet Vitnesses:
and said tracker when either of said slide THOMAS A. HILL,
-Valves is actuated. LOUISE ENDERLE.'
