Description

. ber 16, which JAMES-CARRUTHERS, OF' NEW' YORK, N. Y.
ADJUSTING- APPARATUS.
i Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18,1913.
Application filed July 1, 1910. Serial No. 569,957.
, To all whom t may concern Be it known that'I, JAMES CARRUTHERS, a subject of the King of England, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have linvented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjusting Apparatus, -of which the following is a specification, reference being had -therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention 'relates toimprovements in adjusting apparatus and has particular' reference to and is illustrated in the accompany'ing drawings 'in its application to an automatic playerpiano.
Referring now particularly to the accompanyin-g Figure l in Vertical elevation with parts .broken away, an application of my in vention; Fig. 2 is -an enlarged view of the tracker board side of the same, and Fig. I is an enlarged section of part 'of the tracker'board shown at the right in Fig. 3. I framework upon 5 is part of the casing or which the -usual pneumatic 6-9 is mounted and 7 is a central partition of the pneumatic from which air isexhausted4 by the tube 8. The tubes 10 and 11 connect with either side of the pneumatic as shownand also connect -with one of the principal parts of this invention as illustrated on an en.l
largedV scale in Fig. It.
12 is the sheet of' 'erforated music mount- 14 in the usual manner and 15 is the tracker board attached to the partition Tof the pneumatic. Should the sheet of perforated music 1n passing oven the tracker4 board move to; the right and thereby not register truly with the perforations in the tracker board, the slide memunder the influence of the spring 2() always bears against the edge of the sheet also moves rightwardly thereby eX- posing the tube 10 to the atmosphere through the passage 19 allowing the atmosphereto enter the chamber 9 'of the pneumatic. The partition 7,'is thereby caused to move rightwardlv causing the tracker board to assume the position whichallows for the registration of its openings-.with the Should the sheetof music move leftwardly, the slide member 16 under tension of the spring 20,' vfollows the same thereby exposing the tube drawings, AI have illustrated in.
and F ig.'3 a view, of the `front 11 to the atmosphere which enters by the passage 19 with the result that the partition 7 is moved leftwardlv causing the tracker board toanove correspondingly thereby reestabushing registration between the perfor-ations in the sheet music and the ports of the tracker board. By this arrangement it will be readily observed that proper registrationv can 'be insured automatically withoutI injury to the sheet music. 21 is another spring suitably secured to the block 22 and is adapted to hold the slide 1G upon its seat-- ing.`
23 is a`small lever within convenient reach in turn engages the rack 25 and enables the tracker board to be shifted when required.
Of course it will be understood that vari- -cus modifications may be made without departing fromtlie spirit of the invention as setV forth in the claims.
Having described myt invention, what I claim as new, and` desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: i
1. In piano player mechanism, a tracker bar having note ducts, said tracker bar being adapted for use in combination with sheet music having perforations adapted to register with said note ducts, ports in said tracker bar connected with a pneumatic, a singleedge guide in contact with'one edge by which the pinion 24 can be rotated which only of`said 'sheet covering said ports, means to keep said guide in contact with the edge of said sheet, said guide having a cutaway portion adapted to expose one of said ports to -the atmosphere when said' sheet shifts in one direction Aand adapted to expose the other of said ports to the atmosphere when said sheet shifts in the other direction, and -a connection between said bar and said pneumatic whereby the former is shiftedv b v the latter whenever said sheet shifts thereby restoring registration between the perforations in said sheet and the ducts in said bar.
2. In an apparatus of the. class described, a pneumatic` a tracker over which a perforated sheet of music is adapted to pass, passage-ways through said tracker terminating in ports` a reciprocating slide valve mounted for sliding movement longitudinally of said tracker for opening and closing said ports, guide-ways for said slide valve and resilient means for maintaining the seatingl Contact between said slide valve andthe edge relation between said sheet and said tracker of said sheet, said slide valve in the normal when the slide valve is actuated. 10 position of said sheet being in position to I In testimony whereof I ax my signature Close said ports, and said ports beingopened in presence of two witnesses.
by said slide Valve by the transverse diverg- JAMES CARRUTHERS. ence of said sheet from its normal position, Witnesses:
connectionsA between said passage-ways and WM. J. DEADMON,
said pneumatic,` and means for adjusting the Tiros. OREILLY.
