EEVIOE ADJUSTING THE RELATION BETWEEN IfiUSIC-SHEETS AND TRACKEBS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 111; 20, 1911.
Application filed February 23, 1909. Serial ,No. 479,417.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LOUIS W. SOUTHGATE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful'Device for Adjustin the Relation- Between Music-Sheets and rackers, of which the following is a specification. The object of this invention is to provide a jnew and improved mechanism for automatically preserving or keeping the musicsheet' in an -automatic player in proper tracking position on the tracker.
To this end, the invent-ion consists in pro viding two tracking controlling openings arranged one at each end of the series of note-operating o eni s, outside of the normal track or pat of t e music-sheet so that both tracking controlling openings will be uncovered when the music-sheet is in normal position on the tracker, and in roviding an operating mechanism control ed by said tracking controlling openings for restoring the normal relation between the tracker and music-sheet when the music-sheet moves sidewise out of proper position and covers one of said tracking controlling openings.
into action when' the edge 0 By this arrangement, it will be noticed that the distance between said twotracking controlling openings is greater than the width of the music-sheet so that imperfections or notches in the edge of 'the musicsheet 'normallywill' not act on the tracking-controlling openings, as themusic-sheet on y acts to bring-the operating mechanism the musicsheet'comesgoverone of the tracking controlling openings. The lateral adjustment between 'the-music-sheet and tracker may beprovi'ded" for by moving either. the tracker or music s heetand any form of convenient opefat-i'n mechanism may be employed for makin t e adjustment. a
- In" e=drawings, an arrangement is shown wherebyithef music-sheet is adjusted by "a pneumatically operating mechanism.
-Referii'rig' to the, drawings and 'in detail,

crating a modification.
I lgig 5 is a sectional view taken on the line Referring to the drawings and in detail M designates the music-spool, B the take-hp roll, T the'ztracker, N the note-operating openings in the tracker, and S the music sheet, which parts may be arranged in any of the ustz'al manners common. in instruments oi this class.
As shown, the left-hand spindle 0f the music spool is laced in a spring-pressed plunger 10 and t e right-hand end which is squared is fitted into the end of "a. lunger 11 which isarranged' to slidein a earin' and in -a bracket. The spring-presse plunger 10 normall tends to move the mu The cam is operated by two neumatics P and P, the movable sides of'w ich are con v nected together by a link I. i The righthand pneumatic is-connee I cam by alink 12, bell-crank" 14 link 1.15,
lever 16, shaft- 17-, lever-'18, link 19 and lever 20 mounted on the Shaft 21 which carries th'ecam 12. ranged that when the left-handed pneumatic P operates or collapses, the cam 12' will be moved to allow-the music's'pool to to operate the These connectionsare so ar-* move to the right under the influence of the I p s ringressed plunger 10 and so -that'whefi .t e rig t-hand pneumatic P" operates" or colla ses, the cam 12 will force the music spoo M to the left.
"A'A designate tracking" controlling openin s which are arranged outside of thonorma track of the music sheet'so'that they both W111 be uncovered" when the music "sheet is in normal position on 'thtrarcken' as shown in Fig; 1". These tracking control-j ling openings are shown as 'arran ed 3i tracker but the may be arrange fat any jplace just-outsi e of the track o f'tlii'shelet and preferably between the music spool and the ta'ke-up roll. The tracking controlling openin s are connected by passages or tubes 22 an 23 to valve operating mechanisms which control the admission of the exhaust and 'air into the pne atics. These valve mechanisms are the sa e 'nd the one which controls the pneumatic is detailed inFig.
4 and the description thereof applies to the Qt er'. p -Arranged in fa valve box v which carries the pneumatic P is a diaphragm 24 under [which the passage 22 communicates. A
' small bleeding passage"25 is arrafn ed from saidpassa%l22 to the upper side 0 the diaphragm. iis diaphra has'exhaust or suction on the upper sur ace thereof and attached to thesame is a-valve26 which normallycloses an opening '27. to the wair. As the bleeding passage 25 is small, the valve 26-will normally be kept in its raised'posi tion solong as, the connection. 22 opens to the air which condition exists so long as the music sheet'does'not cover the tracking open ing A. Thi-Walve 26 controlling the opening 27 is arranged in acornpartment which corinects by passage 28 to the space under a diaphragm 29' attached to which'are valves 30 and '31, which valves remain in the position shown in .Fig 4, so long as the opening A in the tracker remains open and the -valve 26 in itsraised' position. {The exhaust is admitted, above the diaphragm 29 through a passage-way 32. and a restricted or bleeding passage 320 connects the two sides of ,dia ragm 291' 'l lie space above the two diap'hragmsfl l and 29 is connected by" a passage 33, so
long as theva'lve 26 remains 1i ","the-exhaust" acts on both sides of the dia ragm 29.and the valves 30 and"31 remain down.
valve 31 controls an openin 34 which extends tfo the atmosphere an the '.val ve 30 controls'a' passage '35 which extends back of a diaphragm 361:0 which is attached a double Valve" 37 and 38, the valve 37 co6 perat'- ing with a-"seat 39' and the valve seat 38 with a seat formed-in the frame.- .So lo'ngas the L exhaust vfact-s at theleftof the diaphragm 36,
the valve '37 is kept to its seat; 5
*40designates a passage-wayinto the pneumatic-P. j 1 41designates an exhaust pipe which is connectedto the chambers formed in the two 'valvebo'xesa The operation'is as fol-lows So' long as 1-,He opening A is uncovered, the parts" remain'li'nthe position shown in Fi' 4; When,
1..;.however the passage A is close the valve drop admitting air under diaphragmopen valve 31 26 will 29 which will raise the same,
" admit air to the left ofthe dia hragm 3'6- and open valve 37 and closejva ve 38 and thus admit suction into the pneumatic eBJvhich collapse .the same and move the'i matic The i position. The same arrangement of valves 1s emgloyed in connection with the pneumatic if the music sheet wanders to the right, the openln A will be covered and the pneu-t to the left to its normal position. Thus, so lon as the music sheet remains in normal operate to move the music sheet and the parts are arranged so that position on the tracker between the two v openings-A and A, the neumatics will not operate, but if the music sheet wanders 'in one direction-or the other, the covering u v of one or other of the openings A orvA tion.
'restore the music sheet to itsnormalposi-' A modified form of valve mechanism is shown in Fig. 6. In this arrangement, the
passage'22 connects by an opening 42 above a diaphragm 43. Air is admitted under the diaphragm by a restricted openin 44. The exhaust is connected above the iaphragm by a restricted passage 45. The opening 42 is made larger than the opening 45 so that when the, openinu A of the tracker is i1n-. covered, -air will flow throu h the opening 42' faster than it can Lescape t rough the small exhaust o nifig 45- and hence no vacuum or suction Wlll beefiected above the diaphragm 43.- But when theopeningA isclosed by the music" sheet, theexhaust' through the opening 45 will"then'.li'ft the diaphragm. .The diaphragm is connected'by a stem 46 to operate" a hinge valve 47'which controls a port 48 controlling the admission of "air to a passage 35 which. operatesfidiaphr'agm 36 and parts 37 to 41 inclusive, arranged as previously described to control the" exhaust into the pneumatic P except that in this ar rangement, the ,di'ap'ragm "36 has a small bleeding -opening 70 to allow .valve "37 normally 'to seat. This arrangement o crates substantially as previousl describedflt being understood that when this. modification is' used, one valve mechanism, such as' shown vin.F1g.- 6, is employed with the pneumatic P and a similar mechanis in connection with the neumatic P.
T e principle of the valve mechanism 'is,
that so regulates t e same is .connected'to the atmosphere,-the atmosphere is admitted to the as the controlling opening which operating pneumatic and so soon as the tracking controlling opemng is covered by the music sheet, the exhaust is admitted to operate the pneumatic.
