WINDOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 12, 1911.
Patented Mar. 4, 1913.
Serial No. 638,110.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, EnwiN J. MoneaN, an English subject, not a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVindows, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to windows, and more particularly to the class having sliding sashes.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a Window in which the sliding sashes thereof are supported in a casing, the same being provided with movable strips permitting access to be had to the weight chambers or recesses which are provided with hinged door-like sections capable of being opened, so that access may be had to the fastenings for connecting the weighted cords of the sashes.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a window of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, and inexpensive in manufacture.
Vith these and other objects in View the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illust-rated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through the sash casement or frame. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation thereof with one of the movable strips detached.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
The window comprises a frame structure including vertical stiles 5, top cross heads (S and a bottom cross sill 7, the same being united in the ordinary well-known manner and have fixed to their faces vertical and horizontal intermediate and outer guide strips, between which are adapted to be mounted slidable upper and lower sashes 8 and 9, the same being of the ordinary wellknown construction. The vertical Stiles 5 of the sash frame are provided in their outer sides with weight chambers or recesses, which are longitudinally disposed therein and extend throughout the greater portion of the length of the stiles. Fixed to the beds of the weight chambers or recesses are spacer strips 10 forming independent grooves, `in which are adapted to move weights all fixed to the outer ends of balancing cords 12, the latter being trained over guide pulleys 13 formed in the vertical stiles 5 near the upper ends thereof, the inner ends of the cords being secured to the upper and lower sashes 8 and 9 in the ordinary well known manner.
The weight chambers or recesses are normally closed by removable closure strips 14, the same being detachably fixed to the sash .frame in any suitable manner and upon the removal thereof, access may be had to the weights and the balancing cords.
Formed in the side stilesf 14 of the sash frame are suitable elongated openings which are normally closed by swinging door-like sections 15, the latter carrying portions of the intermediate guide strips 1G and are hinged to the vertical stiles so that the same may be swung to open position, thus, permitting access to be had to the outer side edges of the upper and lower sashes S and 9 whereby the fasteners for the balancing cords may be mounted in the sashes or removed therefrom, when desired, the door-like sections 15 being normally closed or locked in said position by means of swinging catches 17 thereby not interfering with the travel of the weights in the weight chambers or recesses in the vertical stiles of the sash frame. The spacer strips 10 are formed in separable sections, the lowermost sections of which are carried by the door-like sections 15 as will be obvious.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a window frame, sliding sashes mounted within the same, said frame being provided with balancing weight chambers in opposite sides thereof, the side stiles of said frame having openings therein, doors swingingly connected to the side stiles for closing the saine, spacer strips secured in the weight chambers and terminating at a point above the free ends of said doors, said doors may be swung outwardly to open spacer strips fixed to the doors and eXtendposition. lo ing beyond the said free ends thereof for In testimony whereof I aHiX my signaengagement With said rst mentioned spacer ture in presence of two Witnesses.
strips, thereby forming a continuation of EDWIN J. MORGAN.
said Weight chambers, and removable strips Witnesses:
secured to the outer sides of the side stiles, GEORGE MARSHALL,
whereby upon the removal of said strips the VILLIAM J. DRIVER.
