To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR L. MOORE, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chain Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to chain pipe wrenches of the very common kind in which the head portion of the wrench is constituted by a pair of separated jaws, formed as part of or rigidly connected to a handle bar and in which the chain is pivoted to the head portion, between the jaws, so that it may swing to one side or the other for coaction, reversibly with either of the working edges of the jaws, the head portion having looks or abutments for engagement therewith of lateral projections or studs made as suitably spaced portions of the chain.

The object of this invention is to provide at the end of the chain opposite that by which it is connected to the head portion of the wrench .a clip composed of thin spring metal which is adapted to detachably and yieldingly embrace and engage the handlebar and to be slidable along the latter, so as to serve as a means for keeping the chain engaged with the handlebar at any point along the length thereof as may be necessary to permit of the usual operation of the chain in conjunction with the head of the wrench, by a workman, and thereby preventing the slat-ting of the chain to the rear of its locking point on the head and avoiding annoyance and inconvenience to the user.

The invention is described in the accompanying drawings and as set forth in the claims.

In the drawings: Figure 1. is a sectional elevation of a chain pipe wrench having the present improvement embodied therein. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, the position of the chain being different from that represented in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the wrench showing the changed position of the same corresponding to Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are detailed views of clip and the end link of a chain by which it is carried.

In the drawings A represents the head portion of the wrench comprising the oppositely located separated jaws B B, the op posite edges of which are forwardly convergent and rigidly connected to the comparatively long handlebar C.

D represents the chain pivotally connected at a to the head between the pair of jaws thereof and adapted to be swung to either the upper or lower side of the head as desired. The chain is made with lateral studs or projections b for engagement with the locking abutments cl formed, and rearwardly facing on the head.

G represents the clip which is pivotally connected to the chain at its end opposite that by which such chain is connected to the wrench head, such clip being adapted to constrictively embrace the handlebar and to be slidable along the latter.

The chain at its end to which the spring clip is connected by the pivot or rivet 7" includes a pair of separate and oppositely arranged links 9 g, and the clip is composed of a strip of thin spring metal the intermediate portion 10 of which is return bent to an elongated U form extremities of said thin metal being outwardly extended as shown at 12 12 and downwardly continued in parallelism in the portions 13 13, separated by a distance approximately the same as the width of the handlebar, such portions 13 13 terminating in the parts inwardly curved as shown at 14 and outwardly deflected as shown at 15. The U form portion 10 is crowded between the opposite links 9 and connected by the aforementioned rivet f. The rear end of the chain may, as apparent, be readily engaged with or disengaged from the handlebar, but it will by means of the clip be retained in the slidable engagement with the handlebar well forward thereon, or as far toward the rear end as may be desired for any indefinite time; and the chain while being used by a workman or while being transported, or in storage, will be prevented from slatting or, flapping on the wrench as is manifest and of apparent advantage. WVhen an extra long chain is employed the lateral studs or stops 6 of one of its links may be seated in the locking recess-es (Z thereby limiting the number of links of the chain supported in gripping position.

I claim 1. A chain pipe wrench comprising a handle and duplex tapered jaws on the end of the handle, a chain comprising a plurality of links pivoted at one end to the handle between said jaws, and a clip comprising a U- shaped body of spring metal formed with shoulders engageable with the handle and opposing spring jaws having inset terminals adapted to hold said jaws in clasping position on the handle, the end portion near said shoulders being pivoted to the free end of the chain and said clip being adapted to be adjusted to various positions on said handle.

2. In a chain pipe wrench comprising a head portion and handle bar, the combination with the chain connected to the head portion of the wrench, and a member enibracing and slidable along the bar. and to which the end of the chain is pivoted, and

means whereby the chain may be disengaged from the bar.

3. In a chain pipe wrench, a handle, duplex tapering jaws on one end thereof, a link chain pivoted at one end between the jaws, holding means for engaging any one of the links of the chain to limit the number of links in gripping position, and amember pivoted to the chain, and adapted to slidably embrace said handle.
