WILLIAM N. BEYERLE, OF PASADENA, CALIFORNIA.
AUTOMATIC DISPLAY ADVERTISING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, l/Vnmmu N. Bnvnnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, California, have invented a new and useful Automatic Display Advertising Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of advertising devices which are adapted to be placed upon the roofs of buildings and the like, and consists broadly of a suitable frame work, a series of advertising panels mounted in the frame work a connecting bar hingedly connecting the panels together, and means in the form of a train of gears and lost motion connection for imparting an intermittent oscillating motion to said panels, and means for holding said panels in position during intervals of operation of the lost mot-ion connection.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved advertising device for the simultaneous operation of a plurality of panels at intervals, and consists of the novel features and combinations hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my automatic display advertising device looking in the direction indicated by the arrow 1 in Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a fragmental vertical sectional detail of brake means for holding the panels in position. Fig. 3 is an end elevation looking in the direction of the arrow 3 in Figs. 1 and 4, full lines indicating the position of parts when the panels are in vertical or sight position, and dotted lines that when the panels are oscillated to obscure position. Fig. 4 is a fragmental central vertical section taken upon the line 4-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an end view of one of the panels showing the hinged connection to the connecting bar.
Referring to the drawings in detail, my invention consists of the vertical supporting frame 1, which is preferably constructed of angle iron and comprises the corner supports 2, 3, 4 and 5, the top slde braces 6 and 7 the bottom side braces 8 and 9 the top end braces 10 and 11 and the bottom end braces 12 and 13, thereby forming a rectangular frame. A plurality of display panels 14, 1 5, 16, 17 and 18 are rotatably journaled in horizontal cross braces 19, 20, 21, and 22 secured to the corner supports 2, 3, 4 and 5 Specification of Letters Patent.

of the frame 1,the pintles of said panels being equidistant and journaled in a vertical plane in the frame 1. The main or Operating panel 16 is provided with an operating shaft 19 journaled in the cross brace 20 and extending outwardly through the frame 1 and provided with a pinion 21, said pinion being keyed upon the shaft 19.
Intermittent operating means in the form of a segment 22 is journaled in the frame, upon the shaft 23 and meshes with the pinion 21, said segment 22 being operatively connected to a gear 24 loosely mounted upon a shaft 25 by a lost motion link connect-ion 26, said link being pivotally held by the pin 27 upon the gear 24, said gear 24 in turn meshes with a pinion 28 mounted upon the outer end of, and rigid with a shaft 29 journaled in the frame 1, said shaft also being provided with a gear 30, which is keyed to said shaft and in turn meshes with a pinion 31 mounted upon a shaft 32, said shaft being provided with a second pinion 33 of a little larger diameter than the pinion 31, said pinion 33 in turn meshing with a pinion 34 rigidly mounted upon a shaft 35, said shaft being provided upon its outer end with a belt pulley which may be connected by a belt 37 to an electric motor or other motive power (not shown). The gear 24, pinion 28, gear 30, pinions 31, 33 and 34 forming a train of gears.
The link connection 26 is provided at one end thereof with an elongated eye 38 which engages a pin 39 upon the segment 22, said eye being of such a length that it requires 50 seconds for the pin 29 to take up the lost motion.
The main or operating panel 16 is hingedly secured to a connecting bar 40 by a hinge 4-1 and the panels 14, 15, 17 and 18 are in turn hinged to said connecting bar 40 by hinges 42 so that when the panel 16 is oscillated the panels 14, 15, 17, and 18 will act in unison.
A brake Wheel 43 is mounted on the shaft 19 and adapted to be engaged by a spring actuated shoe 44 held in position by a vertical guide rod 45, said guide rod being slidably mounted in brackets 46 and 47, a nut 48 upon the rod 45 forms a seat for a compression spring 49 which tends to press the shoe 44 down upon the brake wheel 43 thereby holding the panels in position during the period of sight posit-ion and vice versa.
When motion is imparted to the train of Patented Feb. 25,1913.
gears, the gear 2a is operated in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 3 thereby carrying the link downwardly in an arc until the upper end of the elongated eye in the link comes in contact with the pin 39, thereby operating the segment to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and oscillating the panels to a horizontal position; and upon the return movement of the link the seg ment will remain in this position until the pin 39 travels the length of the elongated eye before it takes up the lost motion and starts the segment upon the return movement, the length of said eye being such that it requires 50 seconds for the lost motion to take place, thereby allowing the panels to be exposed to view 50 seconds and vice versa.
It is obvious that many changes may be made in the details of construction Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
In an automatic display advertising device, the combination of a frame, a plurality of panels rotatably mounted in the frame, a connecting bar hingedly connecting said panels, an operating shaft attached to one of said panels, a gear upon said shaft, a segment journaled in the frame and meshing with said gear, a train of gears, a lost motion link connection bet-ween saidzgears and said segment, brake means mounted upon said frame to hold said panels in position and means for rotating said gears to impart an intermittent oscillating motion to said panels.
