To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM J KELLY, a citizen of the United States, fresiding at Clinton, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gearing Systems, of which the following is a specification.
This application is filed as a division of my co-pending application Serial Number 813,552, filed January 21, 1914:, for improvements in washing machines.
The present invention relates to improvements in gearing and proposes a system of gearing for transmitting power from an electric or other motor to two structurally independent instrumentalities employed in combination with one another and designed to be independently regulated or controlled,
notwithstanding their simultaneous operation from the common source of power. While the invention is .perhaps capable of 2 limited general application, its greatest utility will doubtless be for the operation of washing machines andwringers and it is for this useful application that the invention is especially designed.
f 7 It is" customary in the construction of domestic washing machines to include a wringer in the equipment, to support the wringer from the tub, and to employ gearing which drives the washing'mechanism and 1: the wringer from a common source of'power.
The improved gearing of the present invention in its application to domestic washing machines,embodiesa' common driving shaft for the washing mechanism and the wringer and gear connections between said shaft and the washing mechanism andu'theiwringer of such nature that the operation of the wringer may beinterrupted "without 4 f interference fla's M15 and the lever 6 is provided at its with the operation of the washing mecha-' nism or by reversing the electric or other motor which drives the power shaft, the wringer may be reversed without entailing any interruption of the operation of the washing mechanism. The invention avoids the cumbersome reversing gearing which is ordinarily employed and provides gearing which is of simple, compact, and readily accessible structural nature.

The washing mechanism may be of any approved construction comprising a suitable dolly head, (not shown), which, in the embodiment disclosed, is operated by an oscillatory lever 6 movable in a vertical plane and'supported by a suitable bracket 7 set into the cover 2.
,The power for operating the washing mechanism and the wringer is supplied by a reversible electric motor 8 which is suitably supported below the tub and is connected by belt or equivalent gearing 9 to a;
powershaft 10. V
The lever 6 is operated from a shaft 11 through the intermediary of a crank arm 12 on said shaft and a link 13. connected to said crank arm. The lever 6 is to be discon-. nected from its operating means when the cover '2; is raised, and with this object in view, the link 13 includes a frame'li having'its side bar'srece'ssed in their under edges worm wheel 19 operated by said worm, a
bevel pinion 20 fast withthe worm wheel 19, and a bevel pinion 21 fast on the shaft 11 and in mesh with the pinion 20. The worm wheel 19 and pinion 20 are mounted upon a' shaft 22 which operates the wringer 4, driving the lower roll of said wringer by means of gears 23 and 24C. The shaft 22 is rotated by the worm wheel 19 but is splined or otherwise slidably related to said worm wheel and has on its free end a knob 25 by means of which it may be moved in the direction of its aXis. This shaft 22 is slidable in order that its gear 23 may be, at will, engaged with.

by a suitable reversing switch 26, conveniently secured at one side of the wringer stand.
The gears 18,19, 20 and 21 are preferably arranged in a casing 27, which serves as a container for lubricant and is constructed to provide bearings for the. shafts 22 and. 10. The gears 23 and 24 are preferablyarranged within a casing 28 suitably securedto the wringer stand.
Having fully described my invention, I claim 1. In a gearing system of the class described, in combination, a support, a transverse power shaft mounted on the support, an upright mechanism operating, element, a horizontal mechanism operating shaft, a transverse shaft extending at an, angle to said horizontal shaft, connections between the last named transverse shaft and the upright element to oscillate the latter, a worm on said power shaft, a worm wheel operated by said worm, bevel gearing between the worm wheel and said last named transverse shaft, a longitudinal shaft upon which, said worm wheel is mounted, the worm wheel being splined upon the longitudinal shaft and the latter being slidably mounted, a pinion mounted on said horizontal operating shaft and a pinion fixed on said Iongitudinalshaft and engaging said first named pinion in one position of'sa-idlongitudinal shaft.
