WILLIAM H. GEORGE, OF FAI'RFIELD, IOWA, AssIG oR To THE DEXTER COMPANY, A Y CORPORATION or IOWA.
v sunrise.
To all whom it mayconcern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. GEORGE, States, and a resident of Fairfield, in. the county of Jelferson and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gearing; and
I do hereby declare that-the following exact jdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the lettersof reference which form a part of this This invention relates to improvementsin gearing, primarily Intended for the operation.
what is known totion of a wringer in-connectionwith the opchines of the dolly or agitator type, and consists -of the matters hereinafterdescribed appended claims. 7
The advantages of theimproved gearing will appear as I proceed with my specifica- The gearing is-shown herein applied to washer, and in the machine illustrated, there are provided two i V the parts shown of Fig. 2.

At the bottom of said shaft isfixed a beveled gear 23. 24-indicates a horizontal drive shaft Suitably supported in a. vertical plane between the two washing driving pulley 25. The driving pulley 2.5 is adapted to beoperated from any source of power, preferably an electric motor which may be carried by the bench 10 in a familiar On the drive shaft 24 operatively engages the beveled gear 23 to continuously rotate anifestly, the com tmuous rotation of the horizontal shaft 24: bymeansof the connection of the. pulley25 power will produce a conto the source of tinuous rotation of the shaft 20, which in turn will, through the crank-'arm"22 and 21, impart a longitudinal,

m a position 22 at the top having fixed to one end a ment to the dolly shafts of the washing mafchmes.
26 indicates 1a "wringer of familiar 6011.111 3 plane interstruction located in a vertical ald'wl'ingeris rigidly connected to a casing 27 which is rotatively mounted on the topof a board 28 extending between and attached to the tubs of the washing machines. The casing 27 has a base plate 29' which has rotative bearing on a complementary plate 30 fixed to that end ofthe board 28 which is oppo-, site to the position occupied by the power driven pulley 25. The casing 27 is provided with a socket adapted to engage. in suitable apertures, 33,
33*, 33 to lock the casing against horizontal swinging movement.-
The said apertures are so arranged that they will correspond to positions of the casing when the wringer is located in a vertical plane between the two washing machine tubs and when it is located in a vertical plane between one or the other of said tubs and a basket or tub lobottom end, said shaft is provided with a.
catedon the, platform when said platform is in raised position. 4
In the casing 27 is mounted an upright continuously rotative shaft 34: which extends downwardly through the board 28 toward the plane of the horizontal shaft 24. At its I bevel gear 35. Said bevel gear engages a beveled pinion 36 on the end of the shaft 24 which is prolonged into theneighborhood ofthe shaft 34: The upper end of the shaft 34 has bearing in and extends beyond the top of an upright tubular sleeve 30 made integral with the plate 30 and the end 34; of said shaft is squared and projects into a like aperture formed axially within the hub 37 of a gear 37. The bottom end of said hub has a thrust bearing on the top of said sleeve 30 and a rotative bearing in the casing gears 37*, 37 of familiar construction. Said ears are loosely mounted on a horizontal shaft 38 which is the operating shaft of the wringer.
39 indicates a clutch member feathered to the shaft 38 and adapted for operatively connecting the one or the other of the gears 37 37 to said shaft 38.
40 indicates a controlling arm or lever pivoted to the casing 27 and adapted to opwhich it may occupy.
The upright shafts 34: and 20 are suitably supported at theirbottom ends by means of brackets, respectively, 34:,- 20", which may 31 to receive a pin 32 that is 27. The gear 37 engages reversebe attached to the structure ofthe bench washer in any convenient manner.
It is apparent from the foregolng description thatthe wringer 26 andwith it, the casing 27, maybe removed as a whole from the rest of the mechanism, by withv drawing the same in an upward direction. This construction is advantageous in that,
when the machine as a whole is to be shipped, the wringer with its associated reverse gearing may be bodily removed from its operative position on the washing ma chine and crated beneath the frame thereof upon which the tubs are mounted. When setting up the wringer it is only necessary to. place the wringer with its associated reverse gear casing upon the base 30 when itis then ready for use.
The construction and arrangement of gearing shown and described is simple and cheap to manufacture, is efficient and has few parts to get out of order or to require replacement or repair. At the same time, said parts are such that they are easily and rigidly supported in a structure of the kind for which they are primarily intended with a minimum of shock or jar to said structure that is likely to damage or weaken the parts of which it is made.
, I claim as my invention:
