To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Fem Fnmx \Vmss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winthrop, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful lmproven'lents in Hinges for Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in hinges of the type adapted particularly for connecting the parts of a sectional brush, as for instance a shaving brush adapted for use with a shaving outfit supplied in a boX.

The object in view is the pivotal connection of the sections of the brush by means adapted to retain the sections closed or open according to the position given them.

With this and further objects in view, as will hereinafter be set forth in part and in part become apparent, the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as herein specified and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brush having applied thereto embodiments of the present invention, the parts being seen in a condition for operation. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with the parts unfolded. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the plane indicated by line 38 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar section taken on the plane inclicated by line 4l41 of Fig. 2. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail edge views of the respective leaves of the hinge detached, parts being broken away in Fig. 6. Figs. 7 and 8 are plan views of the same while in the form of blanks.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1, 1 indicate the respective halves or sections of a handle which handle is in its complete and operative position when folded as seen in Fig. 1, said handle comprising the halves 1, each formed preferably of a solid body having a recess at one end portion receiving the bristles 2, 2, said bristles being confined by retaining plates 3, 3 which are secured to the handle sections 1 by screws or other suitable retainlng means 4, 4:. Obviously the bristles 2 may be retained in place by additional securing means, as an adhesive, if preferred. The two halves 1 are connected by hinges 5, 5, although it is obvious that a single hinge 5 might be employed if preferred.

Each of the hinges 0 comprises leaves 6 and 7 pivotally connected by a pintle 8 extending through the knuckles S), 9 of the leaf (1 and the knuckle 10 of the leaf 7. The knuckle 10 of leaf 7 is disposed between the two knuckles 9 of leaf 6, and the inner end of each knuckle J is formed with diametrically opposite V -shapcd recesses 11, 11, each end of knuckle 10 being formed with similarly disposed, diametrically opposite, V-shaped projections or teeth 12, 12 adapted at times to rest within the recesses 11 when the ends of the knuckles 9 contact with the respective opposite ends of the knuckle 10. Leaf G is formed with longitudinal slots 13, 13 extending inwardly from the knuckles 9 and leaving between the slots a tongue 1 1 which terminates short of the longitudinal planes of the knuckles 9 so as to accommodate between said knuckles the knuckle 10, the slots 13 dividing the material of the leaf sufficiently for permitting the knuckles 9 to have a relatively small amount of longitudinal play by virtue of possible independent movement of the strips produced by the slots 13, whereby the knuckles 9 may move apart for allowing the teeth 12 to ride between the ends of the knuckles 9 from one set of recesses 11 to the other set thereof, a set of recesses consisting of one recess of one knuckle and the alincd recess of the other knuckle.

As seen in Fig. 7 the blank from which leaf 6 is formed is preferably shaped as a flat sheet so as to enable the use of sheet material for the formation of the leaf, the contour of the blank being such as to facilitate being struck out by employment of a die. As seen in Fig. 7, the blank is formed with the elongated arms 9 which are subsequently rolled to form the knuckles 9. The leaf 7 is also constructed to enable it being stamped from sheet material and in the form of a blank is provided with a longitudinally projectin tongue 10' adapted to be rolled to form tie knuckle 10. Each of the leaves is recessed as at 15, 15 for receiving a retaining bolt or other suitable securing means 16.

Thus it will be apparent that when the teeth or projections 12, 12 of knuckle 10 extend into recesses 11, 11 of knuckles 9, the sections or halves 1 of the handle will be held in the given position, whether open or closed, and may be moved to the other position only by swinging the parts against the resistance effected by the teeth 12 spreading apart the arms which carry the knuckles 9, such spreading action being effected under the resistance of the spring tension of said arms and such spring tension causing the knuckles 9 to spring back into position with the projections or teeth 12 extending into recesses 11 as soon as the teeth and recesses are brought into registry, which will occur upon the halves or sections 1 arriving either at their open or their closed position.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

1. A hinge for a sectional brush adapted to allow the sections of the brush to lie in face contact, said hinge comprising a pair of flat sheet leaves formed of spring sheet material, one of the leaves having a pair of arms spaced apart edgewise and the other leaf having an arm extending therebetween, all of said arms being formed with knuckles, and a pintle connecting the knuckles, the said knuckles being provided with means for retaining the leaves in given adjusted positions and permitting relative pivotal movement of the leaves with respect to each other by an edgewise springing movement of the arms.

2. A hinge for a sectional brush adapted to allow the sections of the brush to be disposed in face contact said hinge comprising relatively thin, fiat spring sheet leaves, one

being formed with longitudinally extend-i ing arms terminating in transversely disposed knuckles and the other being formed with a longitudinally extending arm having a transversely disposed knuckle lying with its axis coincident with the axis of the knuckles of the first mentioned arms, said knuckles having cooperating serrations and recesses for locking the leaves in various adjusted positions, the leaves being free to swing pivotally by lateral separation of the knuckles accommodated by edgewise springing of the first mentioned arms, and a pintle connecting said knuckles.
