W @4 1 ii 39 N00" I'M C0.,WASIIINOTON D c iTn sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN EDWARD MANGOLD, OF GREENSIBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAT-PIN-POINT-PROTECTING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN EnwARn MAN- GOLD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Greensburg, in the county of \Vestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin-Point-Protecting Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a hat pin point protecting device, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a novel device that can be easily and quickly mounted upon the pointed end of a pin to prevent a pedestrian or other person from being injured by contacting with the same; second, a device of the above type that serves as a lock for preventing a pin fro-m becoming lost relatively to a hat; third, a device embodying oppositely disposed spring actuated gripping arms adapted to frictionally engage the pointed end of a pin without injuring the same, and fourth, a device of the above type that is inexpensive to manufacture, durable, susceptible to any desired ornamentation, and highly eflicient for the purposes for which it is intended.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described. and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same- Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View taken on the line III-III of Fig. 2, Fig. 4t is a similar view taken on the line IV-IV of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the line VV of Fig. 2.
A device in accordance with this invention comprises a cylindrical shell lthathas the inner end thereof interiorly screw threaded, as at 2 and the outer end thereof exterior-1y screw threaded, as at 3. Screwed in the inner end of the shell 1 is a plug t that has a funnel-shaped opening 5 whereby the pointed end of a pin 6 can be easily inserted in the shell. The plug 4 has diametrically opposed sets of apertured lugs 7 and pivotally mounted between said lugs by pins 8 are gripping arms 9. Movably arranged in the shell 1 is a keeper 10 that has a tube 11 Specification of Letters Patent.

to receive the pin (5. The keeper has a seat 12 for the ends of the gripping arms 9 and said keeper is adapted to hold said arms normally locked or in engagement with the pin (3. The tube 11, extends through an opening 13 provided therefor in a cap 14. Screwed upon the outer end of the shell land encircling said tube, between the cap 14 and the keeper 10 is a coiled compression spring 15. Mounted upon the outer end of the tube 11 is a head. 16 provided with a recess 17 to receive the pointed end of the pin (5. By pulling upon the head 16 the keeper 10 can be moved out of engagement with the gripping arms 9, the pin 6 released and removed from the device. Itis obvious that the pin can be easily inserted in the device to be gripped by the arms.
One embodiment of the invention has been illustrated, but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such changes'as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
\Vhat I claim is 1. A hat pin point protecting device comprising a shell, a plug mounted in the inner end thereof and having a funnel-shaped opening to receive the pointed end of a pin, gripping arms pivotally connected to said plug within said shell, a spring pressed keeper arranged in said shell for engaging said arms, a cap mounted upon the outer end of the shell, and a head forming part of said keeper to facilitate shifting said keeper within said shell.
A hat. pin point protecting device comprising a shell, a plug detachably mounted in the inner end thereof and having an opening to permit of a pin being inserted in said shell, pivoted gripping arms carried by said plug within said shell, a keeper movably arranged in said shell and engaging said arms, means within the shell for holding the keeper norn'ially in position to close said arms, a cap mounted upon the outer end of said shell, a tube carried by said keeper and extending through said cap, and a head mounted upon said tube to facilitate shifting said keeper.
8. A hat pin point protecting device comprising a shell, a plug detachably mounted in the inner end thereof and having an opening to permit of a pin being inserted in said shell, pivoted gripping arms carried by said normally in engagement with said arms and said arms normally closed.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
JOHN EDl/VARD MANGOLD. Witnesses:
JOHN F. \VENCLLING, Jr., SAMUEL B. FOIGHT.
plug Within said shell a keeper movably arranged in said shell and engaging said arms, a cap mounted upon the outer end of said shell, a tube carried by said keeper and extending through said cap, a head mounted upon said tube to facilitate shifting said keeper and means arranged between said cap and said keeper for holding said keeper 1 Copies of this patent may be obtained for five eents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Eatents, Washington, D.
