Be it known that I, Josemi S. DUNCAN, a citizen of the `United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State ot Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Printing- Forms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to printing forms in general and more particularly to a sectional printing form adapted to print a full page letter or circular at one impression.
One of the primary objects ot the present invention is the provlsion of a printing torni which shall be made up of a plurality of sheet metal form sections, each having printing characters struck up from one face thereof. The sections when assembled are arranged in juxtaposition upon a t'orin bed producing a composite form of the size required to print a single page.
Anotlier object of the invention is to provide a suit-able -torm bed to receive the torni sections and retaining devices b v means of which the sections are secured to the bed and retained in the desired position thereon.
AOther objects, and advantages will be apparent to those skilled inthe art as the invention is better understood by reference to the following description when considered in connection with the aecompanving drawings illustrating the invention in one 'of its preferred embodiments.

Various attempts to print letters in simir lation of typewriting have been made prior` to my present invention but, so far as I am aware, the form from which the page is printed has not been made of sheet metal with the printing characters stamped up therefrom. lt is well known that printing characters stamped up from sheet metal will produce innn'ossions very closely represent.- ing typewriliingr and, by means o'l the sheet metal printing torin cmuprising the subject matter of the present application, a 'full letter page closelv representing a typewritten pa ge can be printed at one operation.

From a n inspection of the drawings it will be observed that the. forni bed which may be made ot. cast metal, or other preferred uniterial. is provided on one face Witha series ot transversely extending grooves or depressions (t arranged in parallelism thrinighout the area of the bed. These grooves are spaced apart a distance equal to the width of the printing form sections 7 so .that when the sections are assembled on the bed their edges will abut against the adjacent sections.
The individual printing form sections, which form the subject matter of another application filed concurrently herewith,-are provided at one edge with downwardly extending flanges 8 which tit into the grooves (l and prevent movement of the sections longitudinallyof the bed. Each torni section is provided on its upper face with a plurality of lines of stamped up printing characters 9 and the sections are so constructed that when they are assembled. on the bed the spacing between the individual lines on the various 'sectionsnvill be equal to the spacing-between .printing forni is thereby secured. Y -For the purpose of locking the forni sections to the bed I have provided suitable retaining devices kWhich will n'ovv be described: "Upon one side of the bed I provide a retaining device in the forni of a bar or plate l0 which. extends slightly above the bed and is provided'ivith an inwardly eX- tending tiange or lip 11 adapted to overlie the ends of the form sections. rihis device is lixedly secured to the bed by suitable screws 12 or other preferred fastening nieans. The corner of the bed beneath the flange or lip ll is preferably cut away as indicated at 13 so'that-the ends of the forni section 7 may beginserted under the flange 'Without removing the retaining device 10 and when. the sections are depressed flat against-theface of the bed the ends Will be tightly gripped beneath the ange. The top ot the retaining device l0 may be provided with a longitudinaliyextending groove 14, if desired, to' prolvideineaiis by which the temporary extensions on the printing sections may be broken litiib'eforethey are p ositior'ied` on the bed. A printing device comprising a bed having one oi its upper edges rabbeted, a printing forni'lying upon the bed with one edge over-hanging the r'abbeted portionof the bed, there being a space between the over-hanging edge portion of the printing forni and the bottom of the rabbet to permit access to the overhanging printing forno portion tor removing the forni and a rcinovable retaining device carried by therebbeted edge of the bed and provided with a flange overhanging the adjacent edge of the printing forni.
