14 Claims.
This invention relates to printers chases, having for its principal object the provision of a novel chase that will obviate the necessity of having two separate chases or protecting the type when a matrix is to be made, the other thin for obtaining a proof.
Another object is to provide a combination chase suitable for preparing a matrix, from type forms secured therein, and then convertible to a chase adapted for obtaining a proof from the same type forms.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a chase of generally improved construction, whereby the device will be simple, durable and inexpensive in construction, as well as convenient,
practical, serviceable and efficient in its use.
In the printing art it is customary to provide a chase for holding printing forms from which stereotype matrices are prepared, with a thicker frame than the frame of the chase employed directly for printing. This is necessary by reason of the fact that when the matrix is rolled or pressed into the type, it is necessary to support the type close to the upper surface of the chase in the normal horizontal position shown in Figure 2, in order to prevent battering down the type that is adjacent to the sides and edges of the form. While the thick chases protect the type when a matrix is to be made, they cannot be used for printing as the chase itself would be inked simultaneously with the type and print a black border around the page or matter printed on. It is common practice to place the form in the thick chase to make a matrix and then to transfer it to a thin chase for obtaining a proof. The present invention is designed and adapted to eliminate this transfer operation as the base portion holds the form for the printing operation, while means forming one of the features of the present invention are placed on top of the base portion when the matrix is to be made.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter and will be best understood when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view, with parts broken away, of an embodiment of my invention as it appears in position for preparing a matrix; T
Figure 2 is a sectional View, partly in elevation, taken on line 2 of Figure 1, showing type forms arranged within the frame.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawing one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to forms, one thick for give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
In the drawing, Ill designates a frame or base within which a quoin I I, a coacting side or locking bar I2, and a foot bar or stick I3 are slidably and adjustably mounted. The quoin II is formed or provided with coacting Wedge surfaces II' which coact with corresponding Wedge surfaces I2' on the side bar I2, whereby when the quoin I I is slid longitudinally by means of an adjusting screw I4 connected thereto and threadedly secured in the foot of the frame I0, the side or locking bar l2 will be moved laterally or inwardly into operative engagement with type bodies or forms I5 in the frame or moved outwardly to unclampthe said type bodies.
The foot bar I3 is provided with a plurality of pockets I6, receiving the stems of adjusting screws I1 threadedly engaged in the lower portion of the frame, and is slidably mounted within the frame I0. Each of the adjusting screws I1 is freely rotatable within a pocket I6 and is confined therein by a screw I8, fastened in the bottom of bar I3, the end of said screw I8 being seated in an annular groove I9 formed on the Stem of the adjusting screw I1. The foot bar I3, as will be observed, is of a length suitable for permitting the lateral or inward movement of the side bar I2 when engaging type forms.
As an important feature of the present invention, a plate, cover or cap member 2l is detachably secured to the frame I0 in any suitable manner as by dowel pins 22 fastened to the plate 2I and received in sockets 22 provided in the frame I0. The inner margin of the cover member 2l is formed with an undercut portion or groove 2| adapted to receive the bolster or marginal projection of a matrix and a registering tongue or projection 23 on a plate or cover member 24 detachably fastened to the foot bar I5 by dowel pins 25 secured to the last mentioned plate 24 and also received in sockets 25 in the foot bar I3, or in any other suitable manner. The plate 24 on the foot bar I3 is also formed with an undercut portion or groove 24' also adapted to receive the bolster or marginal projection of a matrix, and has its upper surface flush with the top of the plate or cover member 2| mounted on the frame Ill.
It will now be understood that when the cover forms adjustably secured plate 2i and plate 24 on the foot bar I3 are in place, a matrix 26 can be rolled over or engaged with the type forms I5 in the manner shown. When it is desired to make a proof, both of the plates 2i and 24 on the frame and foot bar respectively are removed by lifting same, thereby disengaging the dowel pins 22 and 25 from their respective sockets 22 and 25. 'I'he type. forms I5 in the chase may now be inked for the customary proof.
It Will thus be seen that by means of the present invention one instrumentality or chase may conveniently serve two purposes hitherto requiring two separate chases.
I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms Without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
