My invention consists--` First, cfa packing tobaccobox,'jmade with grooves :for receiving and lroldingthe ends, the upper `end or head being arranged to slide, and having a portion,

formingt-lre front` ofthe box, attached` to it, in cornbrnation withtfenders and,ganges, so as to prevent the' tobacco from pressing into the grooves while pack- :Ing itin the box, and to indicate the point to which i the tobacco shouldbepressed, thus i avoidingthe `inconvenience,time,` and expense ot' securing the ends `with beveledrcleats and nails;also,the injuring or breaking ofthe box when opening` it, enabling it to be used repeatedly for `the same purpose, thereby savl ing the cost of a new box. r

Butif the tobacco should rise or spring up sniciently to interfere vwitlrthe insertion' of thel head in the grooves, which it' is likely to do sometimes, after it has been pressed down, the screws b b are loosened, and the upper portonvD raised up, so as to bring the grooves above the top of the to-` baeco.` The head is tiren-inserted, and 'pressure ap"-t plied threon to bring the whole down, when the screws b b are tightened; and, if necessary, to make the upper Vportion D perfectly secure, -three or more dogs, (Luray be driven infon each side overthe joints, andwhen opening the box these dogs can be easily withdrawn and used again.

In the making of the commonpacking tobacco-box, I

1. The packing tobacco-nox, made with grooves to receive and hold the ends, the upper end or head being arranged to slide, and having a portion -forming the front attached.v to it, in combination with fenders and gauges E, all as shown and set forth. y

2. The packing tobacco-box, with the upper portieri made separate-and adjustable by the screws b b, in combination with the sliding head, all as shown Aand set forth.
