TOOL FOR CLOSING THE BUNG-I-IOLES OF CASKS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31,1912.
Application fi1ed January 27, 1912. Serial N 0. 673,870.
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON TUREK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Salzburg, Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Closing the Bung- Holes of Casks and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved tool for closing bung holes of casks and like receptacle, and is especially applicable for inserting and positioning in the bung holes stoppers in the form of thin hollow metallic bungs.
The-primary object of the invention is to provide a tool of this character by means of which the bung is properly and firmly positioned in the bung hole.
The drawings illustratively exemplify the form of invention which is now preferred by me.
Figure 1. is a vertical section through the apparatus with the thin metal cover. Fig. 2. is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3. is a plan of the apparatus. Fig. 4. is a section on AB Fig. 1. CD Fig. 1.
The apparatus for closing the hole comprises a hollow mandrel a which is divided at its lower end into four sectors by longitudinal slits b. The lower end of the man drel a which receives the thin metal cover 0 is formed slightly tapering and is provided with an annular projection or shoulder (Z to limit the depth to which the mandrel can enter the hole. A ram 6 is provided in the hollow mandrel a which can be pressed downward against the action of a spring f. The downward movement of the ram 6 is limited by the horizontal rod 71 which passes through the slots in the sides of the hollow mandrel a, the rod it also serves as a handle for withdrawing the apparatus from the bung hole 1 The action of the apparatus is as follows :The thin metal cover 0 is placed on the tapering end of the mandrel a and the apparatus is placed over the hole 2' as shown I in Fig. 1. By a blow on the top of the ram Fig. 5. is a section on a the whole of the apparatus is inserted in the bung hole and the shoulder d brought against the outer edge of the bung hole 2', the ram 6 moves downward in the mandrel so that all parts of the apparatus are pressed together. This causes the thin metal cover 0 to be forced tightly against the sides of the bung hole and produces a tight closing of the bung hole especially when the latter is slightly tapering. The ram 6 is withdrawn from the hole by the action of the spring f and the whole apparatus removed by the bar it.
The cover being made of flexible material can be employed for various sizes of holes as its sides can be forced out to fit the corresponding section of the hole, also any irregularities in the shape of the hole will be overcome owing to the flexibility of the thin metal cover.
What I declare as my invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is In apparatus for closing the bung holes of easks with thin hollow metal bungs, the combination with a hollow mandrel having its lower end tapering toward the lower extremity of the mandrel and formed of spring metal provided with a plurality of longitudinal slits, a shoulder formed circumferentially about said mandrel imme diately adjacent the largest part of said tapering end, said mandrel being formed with opposed slots at diametrically opposite points in its wall, of a ram having an enlarged lower end and reciprocalole in said mandrel, a spring adapted to normally press said ram out of operative position, and means serving as a handle and adapted to limit the movement of said ram, said means comprising a pin passing through said ram and extending through the slots in the wall of the mandrel.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANTON TUREK.
Witnesses ARTHUR Hnnzoe, INnz BLOOTOR.
