versing Mechanism, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to laundry machines designed for use in washing garments or clotlies of various kinds and classes, also other fabric articles such as bed clothing, table covers and other household supplies, and the object thereof is to pro; vide a machine of this class which is simple in construction, etlicie'nt in operation and which will not injure the articles to be washed; and with this and other objects in viewthe invention consists in amachine of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and. claimed.
The invention is-fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevationot my improved laundry machine with part of the construction broken away and part shown in section; Fig. 2 a vertical section on the line 22 of Fig. 1: Fig. 3 a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 a sectional.

In the practice of my invention I provide a receptacle a which is preferably oblong in form and substantially tub-shaped in transverse verticalsection and for the purpose of this description the side of said receptacle will be called the back side thereof and the side a the front side thereof, and said receptacle is preferably supported on legs a". i

and in one side thereof is a door 0 which may be held in place in any desired man- 'ner, and which is also preferably composed of perforated staves connected by transverse plates 0* on the inner side thereof, and said door may be held in position by means of cleats c pivoted to the drum at 0 or the connection of the door with the drum may be made in any desired manner, The ends of the drum'are closed by heads 0 in the usual manner and said heads are provided centrally with trunnions having suitable bearings c in the ends of the receptacle a, and connected with one of said trunnions is a gear (Z by which said drum is rotated.
At the top of the left end of the receptacle a is su ported a shaft (1 whichis mounted in a bracket (Z secured to said end of the receptacle and one end of which is connection with the back legs a, in the form of construct-ion shown, are brackets e and mounted in said brackets centrally thereof is a'horizontal shaft f, that portion of which between said brackets is provided with reverse threads. The ends of the shaft 7 project beyond the brackets e and the right hand end thereof is provided with a clutch sleeve member 9 which is secured thereto and inwardly 'of which is mounted a drive wheel 9 having a hollow clutch hub 9 adapted to receive the clutch sleeve member 5 The inner end of the hub of the drive wheel 9' is also provided with a clutch member g", and said shaft f isprovided inwardly of the drive wheel 9' with a gear which is rotatable thereon and is provided with a clutch member g which corresponds with the clutch member g. . The operation will be readily nderstood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement thereof.
It will be understood that power may be applied to the wheel 9' in any'desired manner, and in practice, the lever g is manipulated to throw the hub of said whee] into engagementwith the clutch member 9 as shown in Fig. 4, and the shaft f will be turned by said wheel. As the tripper device moves back to the left and strikes the stop is on the rod 2', the above operation is'reversed; the rod 5 is moved to the left and the belt is thrown out of o eration and the belt j into operation an the direction of rotation of the shaft (Z and the drum 7) is'again reversed. 'It will be understood that the operation of the tripper device and the longitudinal movement of the in opposite directions thereby are autnmatieand continue as long as the shaft fis rotated, and the direction of rotation of the shaft d and of the drum b is reversed at regular intervals, and this operation continues as long as the machine is in opera? tion.
The reverse movement of the drum 1) operates, as will be understood, to thoroughly stir-and agitate the garments or articles therein more completely than if the rotation of said drum was in one direction only.-
Nhen the articles within the drum are thoroughly washed they are taken therefrom and passed through the wring-er h and said wringer is operated by manipulating the lever 9 so as to throw the drivewheel 9 into engagement with the gear 9 and in this operation the shaft f is not rotated.
In the use of thismachine the receptacle a is filled or partially filled with water as shown at 0 so that the drum 6. will be entirely covered thereby, and my invention is not limited to the construction of the drum 1) and any suitable device of this class maybe employed,'all that-is necessary being to provide a drum through which the water is free to pass and in which the articles to be washed may be placed, and frornwhich said spirit of my, invention, or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I I 1. In a reversing mechanism of the class described, a rotary member, a gear connected therewith a shaft mounted over said gear and parallel with said rotary member, a
rotary member, two drive wheels loosely gear, two drive wheels secured on said shaft mounted on said power shaft, means for operat-ively connectin the gear wheels on the first named sha t with those on the power shaft, two clutch devices lon 'tudinally movable on said power sha t and and means whereby the operation of the power shaftwill operate said clutch devices and move the, same in opposite directions and reverse the movement of said rotary member. v
2. In a reversing mechanism, a rotary member a'gear connected therewith, a shaft mounted parallel with said member, a pinion secured to said shaft and meshing with said a power shaft mounted parallel with said rotary member, two drive wheels loosely mounted on said power shaft and corresponding with the first named drive wheels,
means for operatively connecting the drive wheels on the power shaft with those on the first named shaft, two clutch devices longitudinally movable on saidv power shaft and adapted to engage the drive wheels thereon, said power shaft being also provided with reverse threads, a tripper rod mounted parallel with said power shaftand provided with spaced stops, a trip device mounted longitudinally of said rod and through which said shaft passes, anotherrod mounted parallel with said power shaft, a spring attachment connected with said rod and having a spiral spring in connection with which the tripper device operates, and means whereby the operation of said tripper device will operate said clutch devices.
