SAFETY DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 3. 1912A Patented Feb. 25, 1913.
UNITED snares WEAVER r. rnssnnn, or (move CITY, rnnnsrnvnnia.

Application filed April 3,
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known thatI, 'WEAVER F. Fnssnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grove'City, county of Mercer, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to guards for ma ohinery that is, to guards especially adapted for use in conjunction with machines having a number of exposed moving parts such as? gear wheel s, fly wheels, beltsor other rotatproperly attend to the same.
mg orreciprocating elements. The primary object of my invention is to provide a cover or casing which may be arranged adjacent the exposed moving parts of the machine to prevent persons from accidentally coming in contact with or getting parts. A further object of my invention is to provide a device for thepurpose stat-ed. of such their clothing entangled in said moving construction that all portions of the machine shall be visible to the operator and that access may be readily had to the guarded parts when necessary, incase of accident Other objects Will appear hereinafter. With these objects in view my invention consists generally in a support adapted to be, secured in position: adjacent the machinery to be guarded, and a screen hingedly mounted on said support whereby the screen may 7 be readily swung out of the Way when it is desired to have access to the guarded parts.
My invention-further consists in forming the hingedly mounted screen of coarse wire screening in order that all parts of the ma-- chine may be visible to the operator and at the same time be of suiiicient strength to serve its purpose as a guard.
My invention further consists in a hingedly mounted screen as stated in combination with a locking member comprising an arm adapted to be secured to the frame of the machine or adjacent thereto and provided with a hook portion into which a portion of the frame. of the screen may be sprung and retained.
My invention further consists in various details of construction and arrangement of Specification o1 Letters Patent.

parts aux n will be ma described hereinafter and particularly pointed out the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine guard embodying my invention, in its pre- -ferred=-' form and illustrating .the same in position at the end of a machine. jllig. 2

.isza'perspective View of the guard and-Fi ber.
diagrammatically a machine to which the guard is applied and of which A indicates the frame. portion of my invention and is illustrated merely to give a clear idea of the arrangement and use of the guard, hence detailed description thereof is unnecessary.
The guard proper comprises a frame 1 formed of a rod bent to the proper shape and size and a screen 2 secured thereto. WVhile I have shown in the drawings a screen of particular shape it is to befunderstood that the frame and screen ,are to be varied in both size and form tosuit the particular machine or part to be guarded. I
In Fig. l of the drawing I have illustrated The machine per he forms no usually prefer to have the screen 2 of concave form 1n order to inclose the moving unobstructed \'l0\\ of all parts of the Ina- -chiue I prefer to muke the screen 2 of coarse Wire mesh as illustrated.
7 indicates a support upon which the screen is mounted. This comprises 1. bar adapted to be. secured a frame of i i machine or adjacent th; 5111 16" and to this end is provided with off set arms 8 and 9 t which are erforated as at 10 to receive the -fastening evicesby which it is secured in position. The arms 8 and 9 are preferably formed by bending the ends of the bar 7. 11 indicates hinges wherebythe guard is hingedly mounted on the support 7 A locking'member is provided con1prising a bar 12 adapted to be secured to the frame of the machine or adjacent thereto and provided. near one end with a perforation 13 to receive the securing means and at the other end with a U-shaped portion or hook 14 to receive the adjacent portion of E has full view of all portions of construction and efficient for the -prevent1ng persons or clothing from coming the frame l'when the guard is in closed position. From the construction of the guard it has sufficient resiliency topermit the frame 1 tobe sprung into the hook 14. When the operator desires to obtain access to the guarded portions of the machine the frame is readily lifted out of the hook of'the locking member and the screen swung upon the hinges 11 until out of the way v The guard of simple purpose of above described is accidentally into contact with the moving machine. Furthermore, While completely incasing the moving elements, the operator his machine and may obtain quick access to thesame when desired or necessary.
to said frame.
2. A guard for machinery comprising a screen consisting of an outer Wall, top and side walls adapted to inclose the machinery to be guarded, a frame for said screen comprising a rod bent to shape and secured to the inner edges of said top and side walls and the bottom edges of said side walls and outer wall, said screen being formed of wire mesh, a support, and a hinged connection' between said support and said frame, sub
stantially as described.
In testimony whereof'I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
