' SCREEN DOOR GRILLE Filed June 4, 1929 0 ATTORNEY .7
Patented July 14, 1931 UNITED STATES HARRY PATENT OFFICE J. LEBHERZ, OF FREDERICK, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE EVEREDY COM- PANY, OF FREDERICK, MARYLAND, A CORFORATIQN OF MARYLAND I SCREEN DOOR GRILLE Application filed. June 4, 1929. Serial No. 368,392.
My invention relates broadly to protective attachments for screens and more particularly to a construction of a grille adapted for installation upon the frame of a screen for protecting the fine wire screen against injury.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a construction of protective grille for screens by which the fine wire mesh of a screen may be protected against injury from obstructions and pressure brought to bear against the protective grille rather than against the fine wire mesh of the screen.
Another object of my invention is to provide a construction of attachable grille for screens with means by which the grille may be centered over that area of the fine wire screen mesh which it is desired to protect against injury.
V A further object of my invention is to provide a self-sustaining grille which is attachable to the frame of a screen for protecting the screen against injury for safeguarding an entrance-way, the grille being supported with respect to the screen from a multiplicity of positions on the frame of the screen.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a construction of grille for the protection of screens wherein the grille comprises a multiplicity of laterally and longitudinally extending strip members, interlaced or woven, electrically welded at their .extremities with strengthening ribs outstruck from the strip members intermediate the junctures with means for adj ustably centering and supporting the grille with respect to the frame of the screen.
My invention will be more fully understood from the specification hereinafter following by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 illustrates the grille of my invention applied to the lower section of a screen door; Fig. 2 illustrates a modified form of grilled structure of my invention applied to an intermediate section of the screen door; Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary View of the grille of my invention showing one of the supporting means by which the grille may be centered with respect to the frame of the screen; Fig. 4C is a crosssectional view through the grille structure on line 4:4: of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view of one of the adjustable supporting means for the grille taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view. through the grille structure on line. 6-6 of Fig. 3.
The grille of my invention finds particular application upon screen doors where it is desired to protect the fine wire mesh of the screen door against injury. The grille consists of a multiplicity of laterally and longitudinally extending strips which are electrically welded attheir extremities and are each strengthened by an outstruck rib intermediate the junctures of the strips. The grille is provided with marginal supports, each of which have a portion thereof having a substantially tubular cross-section into which pin members are arranged to adjustably slide, which pin members are supported from the frame of the screen. By provid ing adjustable pin or rod members at each corner of the grille, it is possible to adjust the grille to screens of different sizes in order to properly center the grille with respect to the frame and the screen which is carried by the frame.
Referring to the drawings in. more detail, reference character 1 designates a screen door having an upper screen section 2 and lower screen sections 3 and f. The lower screen sections are protected against injury by the application of the grille '5 to the frame of the screen. T 1e grille 5 as shown more clearly in Fig. 3 comprises a m ultiplic' ity of laterally extending strip members 6 and vertically extending strip members 7 which are woven or interlaced between a pair of marginal frame members 8 and 9. The marginal members 8 and 9 have a substantially tubular portion 10 into which rod members 11 project at each of the four corners thereof. The rod members 11 are each provided with flattened portions 12 which are secured by means of screw members 14 to the frame of the screen in that position by which' the grille may be centered over the fine Wire screen mesh. The laterally and longitudinally extending strip members 6 and 7 are each provided with outstruck ribs 15 intermediate the junctures of the strips at 16 for the purpose of strengthening the grille. The junctures 16 are not mechanically connected, the strips being shaped to provide offset flattened portions at each of the cross-over points to permit the weaving or interlacing of the strips without displacement of: the strips substantially out of alignment with the plane ofthe grille. The strips are maintained in position by connections at the extremities thereof. The flat faces of the strips abut with each other and their intersections, and by virtue of the inherent resiliency ofthe strips sufficient tension is made effective to secure the strips in substantiallyzthe same plane. The marginal members 8 and 9 each have parallel extendingjaws which I have designated at 17 between which the ends of strips? project for the purpose of confining the vertically extending strips by a welding process rigidly to the marginal members 8 and 9. .It will be observed that the strips 6 and 7 pass alternating. above and below each other at the. juncture positions in the nature. of awoven -or interlaced structure by which the grille structure is considerably strengthened.
The grille of my inventionhas. been found to be extremely practical in its construction and successful in its use. The grille may be attached to screen-doorsor windows of various sizes and serves to. protect the screen against the pressures to which the screen may be subjected inthe normal wear and tear in the use of the screen door. The grille also provides .safety means when applied to windows in protecting a screened entrance againstthe cutting away of the screen for the purpose of entry therethrough.
lVhile I have described the grille of my invention, in certain of its .preferred embodiments, I desire that it be understood that modifications may be made and that'no limitations upon my invention are intended other than are imposed by the scope of the appended claims.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. A grille structure .comprising a multiplicity of laterally .and' longitudinally extending strip members interwoven with each other in tensioned engagement at the junctures thereof, outstruck ribs formed in said tionally engaging the inner walls of the cylindrical recesses in said marginal members for supporting said grille structure.
2. In a grille structure, a multiplicity of strips extendingsubstantially at right angles with respect to each other and interlaced, said strips resiliently engaging each other at the intersections thereof and provided with strengthening ribs intermediate said intersections, marginal members at opposite ends of the grille for receivingqtheends of the strips which extend at substantially right angles-thereto, tubular portions formed in said marginal members, and pins frictionally engaging the tubular portions of said marginal members for mounting said grille structure.
3. In a. grille, a multiplicity of strips extending substantially at right angles with respect to each other and interlaced one -with the other to form a multiplicity of sections, said strips ,being mechanically free from each other .at each intersection but resiliently sprung together, means strengthening saidstrips intermediatethe intersections. thereof, a pair of marginal members at opposite ends of said grille, said marginal members each including portions which receive the ends of -strips-extending at right angles to themarginal members and being provided with tubular portions adjacent each corner of the grille, and adjustable pin members telescopically positioned within the tubular portions of said marginal members, for. supporting said grille.
4. A grille comprising a plurality of laterally and longitudinally extending interwoven strip members, marginal members extending along two opposite edges of said grille, said marginal members each comture.
