DOOR-FASTENER.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25,1913.
To all 107mm, t may concern Be it known that I, JosnPI-r Fare, a sub- `iect of the King of Great Britain, and resident of the city of St. Catharines, in the county of Lincoln, in the Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in door fasteners, as described in the following specilication and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
The invention consists essentially in the novel construction and arrangement of a pair of hinged members whereby a projecting member from the door is engaged and held securely by a spring held clip member secured to the door frame.
The objects of the invention are, to stop the jar and noise of the closing of doors particularly spring closed doors, to provide a combined buffer and door holding device of simple and durable construction r nich may be manufactured at very low cost and may be very easily and quickly placed in position.
ln the drawings Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device, showing it attached to the door amb, the closed door being shown in horizontal section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the device as used in holding a door open.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding` parts in each figure.
Referring` to the drawings, 1 is the rigid portion of the device formed of a right angular shaped bracket member 2 secured to the door frame 3 by suitable screws and leaving the forwardly extending member 4 arranged substantially parallel with the frame. The member 4 is formed with a downwardly projecting lug 5 mid-way of its length and a downwardly projecting headed end 6 at. its forward extremity.
7 is a lug projecting downwardly from the rear end of the member 4.
8 is a movable member having an upwardly extending lug portion 9 intermediate of its length pivotally secured by the pin 10 to the lug 5 of the rigid upper port-ion 4. rthe lower portion 8 is formed with a head end 11 corresponding to the end 6 of the upper portion and with the head end of the member 4 forms a aw member.
12 is a lug projecting upwardly from the rear end of the member 8 in perpendicular alinement with the lug 7 on the upper member.
13 is a coil compression spring` encircling the lugs 7 and 12 and extending between the fastener members and resiliently holding the meeting ends of the head portions 6 and 11 in engagement.
14 is a screw-eye or other suitable looped member secured in the inne-r side of the door 15 in alinement with the points of the head portions 6 and 11.
In the use of this device, when arranged to hold the door closed the fastener member is secured to the door frame so that the inner curved edges of the head shaped portions engage the loop portion of the screw eye and are held by the spring 13 thereby holding` the door closed tight. Two sets of screw holes are provided in the angular bracket so that the device may be secured to the wall to engage a screw eye on the other side of the door to hold the door open.
The holding device being spring held allows of the door being released by a simple pull er push, the spring held members spreading apart and allowing the escape of the screw eye. ln fastening the door open or closed the front edge of the screw-eye enters the V-shaped opening leading to the meeting points of the heads of the device and the swing of the door forces the heads apart. rlhe resistance of the spring held member effectually checks the slamming of the door so that it closes without undue noise and when the door is closed the device holds the door firmly to such position.
,A device suoli as described is very useful particularly in summer time for screen doors which are supported on spring hinges and are constantly banging. Further, such doors are frequently warped and get out of shape and for other reasons do not close tightly and the present invention obviates this difficulty and prevents the ingress of flies and other insects to the house.
That I claim as my invention is In a door fastener, a sheet metal strip shaped to form one member of a jaw and having the other end bent outwardly and again at right angles forming a return right angular bracket, said bracket projecting above the longitudinal outer edge of the main portion and having screw holes therein, a lower jaw member formed of a strip of sheet metal pivotally connected intermediate of .its length lo the upper am' member, said the County of Lincoln, Province of Ontario, jaws 110mg adapted to engage a projecting 111 the 1301111111011 of Canada, 1111s tl11rl'1ell1 .member from the door7 and a splral sprmg day of November 1911.
