ADJUSTABLE WALKER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SUSAN LOUISE Are NOLD; acitizen of the United States, residing at Ottawa in the county of Lasalle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable lValkers of which the following is a specifi cation.

My invention relates to an adjustable walker.

My invention is designed for the service of those who through sickness or other cause, are deficient in the necessary strength or have lost the ability to walk.

My invention comprises seating, supporting and adjustable bars associated with the portable structure adapted to support or aid in the support of the user either sitting, standing or walking.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing a hinged side in opened position with relation to the main frame. Fig. 2 is a top view of the device; Fig.3 is a front end view of the walker; Fig. 4: is a side view at theleft of the device; Fig. 5 is a rear end view of the device; Fig. 6 is a side view at the right of the device; Fig. 7 is a sectional View showing a seat portion and adjustable back associated with the seat; Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a rod support associated with the framework and adapted to support the adjustable back; Fig. 9 is a commode; Fig. 10 is a perspective view showing the means for uniting the adjustable bars to upright sections of the framework; Fig. 11 is a perspective view in detail of a ratchet bar and a cam lock therefor associated with the framework; Fig. 12 is a perspective view of a slotted angle plate adapted to work in connection with ratchet bar shown in Fig. 11; Fig. 13 is a detail view showing means of connecting the adjustable bars with vertical frame parts; and Fig. la is a detail view showing means of locking the gate portion in connection with the framework.

In the drawings, 2 indicates corner posts which may be of any size desired. The corner posts may be connected in any suitable manner to produce a rectangular frame structure of the nature disclosed in the drawings, but I have shown the posts at the front end of the device connected by means of cross frame pieces 3, which may be permanent in character. connected by means of cross frame pieces 4 which may likewise be permanent in character. The front and rear posts at the left side of the framework may be connected by means of a bar as 5 which may be of a permanent character. The right hand side I have shown built in substantially gate form and comprising uprights as 6 and 7 connected at their lower ends by means of frame piece 8. To this frame is permanently connected horizontal frame pieces 9 and 10, and the outer ends of said frame pieces are connected by means of vertical bar 11. This frame is adapted to be hinged to the main framework as at 12.

13 is a box formation or commode built in at the rear end of the main structure. the top of which may be of the usual stool formation and may be provided with a suitable upholstered cover. The entrance to the commode is provided at the back. as shown in Fig. 5, into which a door as 14 is adapted to be fitted, and the same may be provided with a suitable lock.

15 is a sanitary pan which may be of any suitable form desired and may be placed within thecommode through the opening at the rear of box 13.

16 is an adjustable back which may be upholstered as shown. The lower portion of the back is pivoted upon rod 17 supported in connection with rear uprights 2 by passing through perforations in the frame-parts of the back. Adjustable means are provided for changing at will the position thereof, comprising angle plates as 18 attached to the inside faces of the rear uprights 2 and each provided with a slot as 19.

20 are ratchet bars adapted to be pivoted to the respective sides of the adjustable back and adapted to be carried through slots 19 in angle plates 18. The outer ends of ratchet bars 20 are of greater width than the main body thereof and wider than the length of slot 19, which proportioning of the ratchet bars prevents the same from being wholly withdrawn from angle plates 18.

21 (see Fig. 11) is a cam adapted to be pivoted to angle plate 18, there being one of such cams at each side of the adjustable back supported in such relation to the ratchet bars 20 that as the ratchet bars are in engagement with the edge of slot 19 in any desired position in angle plate 18, the cam may be turned to hold the bars firmly in place and may be moved to release the bars so that adjustment of the back may be had at will.

I have provided adjustable bars in con- 5 nection with the right and left hand sides of the general frame structure to afford support of the user either in standing, resting position or in walking position. The bars on the left hand side are designated respectively 22 and 23 and they are detachably hand side of the structure, I provide a plurality of perforations as 2' in vertical corner posts 2 and in connection with an intermediate permanent vertical frame piece 25. (hi the right hand side of the structure and 5 in connection with the openable gate portion, I have provided a pair of bars '26 adapted to be seated upon upright frame pieces 27 in the manner shown in Fig. 13, the ends of said bars being connected on the outside of vertical frame pieces 27 by means of cleats 2S. 26 being connected. in the manner described and shown, they are movable together up or down upon vertical frame pieces 2'7. A slot is provided in each end of the parallel bars 26 adapted to receive the upright frame pieces 27 and be locked in position by bolts as 2a (see Fig.

26, and 30 in connection with vertical frame pieces 27 may be provided, the washer or strip 29 to be threaded to receive the threaded end of bolt 22 and the metal strip of washer 30 serving as a wearing plate.

31 is a table and 32 a foot board. Said table and foot board may be provided with cleats overlapping the edges of the frame parts and are readily detachable so that they may be placed in position or removed at will.

33 are brackets fixed to one of the rear corner posts 2 serving as a support for the forward end of the gate formed right side portion of the frame structure.

34 are hoolis on one of the corner posts 2 and 35 are eyes (one of which is shown in Fig. ll) upon the gate adapted to lock the latter in closed position.

36 is a shelf upon which the user may lean as a rest while standing and 37 is a brace which extends from the shelf to the horizontal bar at the left of the frame structure.

This device is intended as an aid in assisting a person in walking. The device as constructed with the openable side accommodates the placing of the structure adjacent a bed, making a convenient entrance from the bed possible. The seat and back are disposed relatively and the latter made adjust able to accommodate a comfortable sitting place for the user. The commode feature adds to the usefulness and convenience of the device. The adjustable bars accommodate adjustments for the most convenient desired support for the user in standing or in walking. The removable table and foot board are conveniences of evident value.

I have shown one form of embodiment of my invention but desire to cover by my patent all forms of walkers without regard to proportion of parts or particular arrangement thereof that may legitimately fall within the scope of my invention.

What I claim is:

In an adjustable walker, a movable frame structure comprising permanent end sections, and -a side section and openable side sections hinged to the structure, a seat por tion within the structure and an adjustable back associated with the frame and in juxtaposition to the seat, adjustable bars forming a part of the permanent side portion, one of said bars extending only a portion of the length of said side, leaving an open space convenient for the passing of articles therethrough, an adjustable frame comprising a plurality of longitudinal bars upon the hinged section, said frame extending only a portion of the length of said hinged seetion, leaving an open space for the convenience of passing articles therethrough and means for securing the bars in their several adjustable positions substantially as described.
