GRAVE ORNAMENTATION.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MILTON S. PorrnNonn, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Sharonville, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grave Ornamentation, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to monuments or ornamental edgings and embellishments for graves and the object thereof is to provide a monument that encircles or surrounds the grave and is adapted to be handled in a sectional or knock-clown manner for economy, convenience and adjustabilit-y.

The invention consists of a grave monument or ornamentation comprising a pair of longitudinal, parallel side-sections and a pair of end-sections, each one of said pair of end-sections being adapted to match with and fit so as to make joint with the opposite ends of said side-sections and both said sidesections and end-sections having suitable ornamentation or embellishment constructed thereon.

The invention further consists in the provision of a grave monument or ornamentation comprising a pair of side-sections, an endsection adapted to detachably fit or make joint with one end of the parallel pair of side-sections and another end -section adapted to detachably fit the other end of said parallel pair of side-sections, the lastnamed end-section having a base or pedestal portion forming a part thereof and supporting an upright monument or head-stone.

The invention still further consists in the provision of a grave monument or ornamentation comprising a pair of parallel sidesections having suitable ornamentation, a semicircular end-section detachably fitted to one end of said pair of parallel side-sections and having similar ornamentation, another end-section partially semicircular and having constructed integral therewith a hollow base or pedestal portion having a shouldered or recessed open top and adapted to be adjustably fitted to the other unclosed end of said parallel pair of side-sections and said partially-semicircular portion being similarly ornamented, and a monument or headstone having its base detachably fitted to said shouldered or recessed open top of said base or pedestal portion.

In the accompanying sheet of drawings forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, showing the parts Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a transverse sectional eleva tion, (but on a larger scale,) taken on the dotted-line a, a, of Fig. l, but with the lower portion of the monument or head-stone broken off and, also, showing in addition to what is seen in Fig. 1 a cross-section of the elevated or mound portion of the grave so as to indicate the manner in which my improvement herein is placed over the grave; Fig. 4, a fragmentary sectional elevation taken on the dotted-line m, w, of Fig. 3, but omitting the said mound portion of the grave; Fig. 5, a transverse sectional elevation of the upper fragmentary portion of the base or pedestal, taken on the dotted line y, y, of Fig. 4, but omitting the fragmentary part of the lower part of the headstone seen in Fig. f, and, also, omitting the cement seen in said Fig. 4; Fig. 6, a detail plan view of the cement holding-plate for use in making the joint between the bottom of the head-stone and the top of the base or pedestal; and Fig. 7, a plan view of a modified form of grave ornamentation or embellished edging made in accordance with my invention herein, but with both end-sections alike, instead of having one of such endsections in the form of an upright monument or head-stone such as is shown in Fig. 1.

In these views, 1, 1 indicate a pair of longitudinal, parallel side-sections, 2 a head end-section and 3 a foot end-section, all, when assembled, forming a monumental girdle or open frame adapted for use in encircling or surrounding the mound portion of a grave. Each of these sections is preferably made of cast metal of inverted L-shape cross-section, the opposite free ends of the several sections having transverse ribs or closures 4 and the latter having oblique open slots or notches 4 for the engagement of bolts 5 to secure the several sections together in a detachable manner.

6 represents each one of a series of upright hollow projections made along the upper edge of the said several sections of the grave border or edging and forming a battlemented design along said border, facets 6" on the upper faces of said projeo tions (5 being provided in connection with small, rounded, central nibs 6 to further embellish the ornamentation of the border.

The side or intermediate sections 1 may be of varying lengths to suit different lengths of gralves, Fig. 1, showing long lengths of side-sections for a long grave and Fig. 2, showing short lengths of side sections for a w short grave. The ready adaptability of the varying lengths of sideseetions to different sized graves is an important feature of my invention herein.

In Fig. 7, I have shown the entire border or frame as being made of battlement design, the opposite end-sections being both semicircular and counterparts of each other. This form of ornamentation and of using corresponding end-sections is suited to a very economical and plain purpose, as is ob- 'vious, but when it is desired to more elaborately embellish the grave, one of the semioular end-sections is substituted by a partially semicircular end-section having made integ'al therewith a hollow box-form base or pedestal '7 that takes position ordinarily at the head of the grave. This base or pedestal 7 has a rectangular opening in its top, such opening being provided with a recessed edge or seat 7 adapted to receive and support the lower or base portion 8 of a monument or head-stone 9. The base 8 and shaft or body port-ion 9 of the monument may be made of marble, granite, or other suitable material and a mass or layer of cement 1G applied to the bottom of the base 8 to aid in supporting the monument in place. Said cement 10 is laid upon a plate 11. suitably suspended by bolts 12 from the recessed edge 7 of the open top pedestal 17. 'llransverse ribs 11 are preferably provided on the upper face of the plate 11 to both stiffen it and space it from said recessed edge 7 of the pedestal 7 so as to duly allow for drainage of the water from the cement in the drying and setting of the latter. Open slots ll are provided in the opposite ends norm-pee of the plate 11 for convenience in applying the bolts used in attaching said plate in position and allowing for any irregularities in the fitting of said plate.

It is obvious that any style of monument may be used to suit the taste or the purposes of those ornamenting the grave, the cross shown in Fig. 1 being quite a popular form adapted to the purpose, and the style of ornamentation along the upper edge of the side and end sections of the edging may also be changed at will or to suit the purposes of those ornamenting the grave as well.

As cast metal is the preferred material used in the making of the side and end sections, it is my purpose to enamel both the inner and outer faces of said sections to avoid rust and corrosion and, at the same time, to readily preserve and maintain the device in a cleanly, bright and presentable condition.

I claim 1. A grave-ornamentation comprising a suitably ornamented border or edging made up of two semicircular end-sections of in verted L-shape material and having transverse, open-slotted end-closure webs or ribs, a pair of independent straight longitudinal side-sections of a corresponding inverted L-shaped structure and, also, having transverse, open-slotted end-closure webs or ribs and fastening bolts engaging said contacting open-slotted end-closure webs or ribs,

A grave monument or ornamentation comprising a suitably ornamented edging or border adapted to surround the grave mound and made up of end-sections and parallel side-sections detachably connected in relation, a base or pedestal forming a part of one of said end-sections and having an open .ing in its top surface surrounded by a recessed or shouldered edge, a plate suitably suspended from said shouldered opening and adapted to hold or support a mass of cement or other suitable plastic material, and a head-stone or monument supported in said recessed opening and held fast by said mass of cement,
