BURIAL-GASKET.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK D. GARD- NER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented ce1-tain new and useful Improvements in Burial-Gaskets, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to burial caskets, and consists in the novel construction hereinafter' described and claimed.

The object of my invent-ion is to provide an improved octagonal burial-casket, whereby the interior draping or lining will be automatically moved in front of the unsightly and objectionable cut-away corners of the casket and lid and act as a screen to conceal the same from view whenever the lid is opened; and thereby render the casket less gruesome to sensitive and to artistic mourners and friends.

In the drawings: Figure l is a front perspective view of a burial casket having my invention applied thereto, portions being broken away to economize in drawing space; Fig. 2 is a rear perspective view of the same; and Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same.

The numeral 1 indicates the casket, which may be of any of the usual forms having what are known as octagonal ends, and it is provided with the usual lid 2, hinged at one side to said casket.

The four corners of the casket 1 and its lid are necessarily cut away at 3, in order to match, thereby leaving a triangular space 4l at the intersection of the casket and its Specification of Letters Patent.

lid. Heretofore this triangular space has presented to sensitive natures a somewhat unsightly or oifensive appearance, and to avoid this objectionable feature I extend the internal lining 5 continuously across the unsightly triangular space 4, so that said lining will present an unbroken appearance at the point where it crosses over the said triangular space, and in a great measure avoid said objectionable feature. The lining 5 is secured in position by the usual tacks and other` fastenings, which need not be shown or described.

The operation of my invention is very simple, and need not be further described except to say that when the lid 2 is opened the lining 5 will be extended across the triangular space 4 as shown in the drawing, and when the lid is closed the said lining will be folded within the casket without interfering with the action of the lid.

What I claim is:

The improved burial casket, comprising a body, a lid hinged to said body and both body and lid having matched octagonal ends, anda lining secured to the lid and arranged to open with said lid and act as a screen to conceal the unsightly triangular spaces between the ends of said body and lid, whenever the lid is opened.
