Description
C;'SCHOTT.
Pencil Attachment for Dividers. No.105,3 76. V Patented Ju|y.12,1870.'
N. PETERS. mwmmnp'm WM a a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SCHOTT, OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JAMES H. BRUCE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PENCIL ATTACHMENT FOR COMPASS ES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 105,376,dated July 12, 1870.
Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Sonora, of the city of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Compasses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specifica tion, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of an ordinary pair of compasses carrying uponv it my improvement, and Fig. 2 a transverse view of the improvement.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention consists in an adjustable holder of novel character, attachable to compasses or dividers of various kinds, whereby a pencil or other marking or cutting device may be thereto attached and removed at pleasure.
In order that others may be better enabled to understand the construction and operation of my invention, 1 will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawing.
A is a pair of compasses of ordinary construction. B is the pencil to be attached thereto, and which may be replaced by a pen or chalk, or knife for cutting, or any other marking or cutting instrument which may be deadjustment to each other, and upon the compasses and pencil, by means of a set-screw, j, which, when tightened, secures the sections of the holder C respectively upon the com passes and pencil, and, furthermore, retains the said loops 0 and d in whatever position they may have been placed relative to each other.
In the operation of this invention, or when it is to be applied to the compasses, the setscrew f is turned backward until the rigidity of the joint is destroyed and the sectional loops or bands 0 and d are sufficiently expanded for the introduction of the leg of the compasses within the one and the pencil within the other, after the introduction and ad justment of which the set-screwf is partially tightened to, retain said adjustment, and the connecting-joint is then so adjusted upon the set-screw as a pivot as to give the point of the pencil or other instrument the most suitable direction, after which the set-screw f is firmly tightened, thereby effectually securing the holder'upon the compasses, the pencilwithin the holder, and the relative position of the sections or loops 0 and d to each other.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured by Letters Patent, is-
An adjustable holder composed of sectional elastic loops 0 and d and set-screw or pivot f, constructed substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
I CHARLES SCHOTT. Witnesses:
A. 0. BRUCE, GEO. M. FLETCHER.
