ALLAN C. SARGENT, OF WESTFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
SOCKET-WRENCH.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. its. 1911;.
Application filed March 28, 1910. Serial No. 551.772.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, ALLAN (l biuaacx'r, a citizen of the United States. residing at Vl estl'ord. in the county of .\liddlesex and State of lllassachusctls. haw invented a new and useful Socket-ll'rcuch. of which the following: is a specification.
This invention relates t a socket wrench.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide a single complete socket wrench without. removable parts. which shall be suitable and convenient for use in various places, particularly on automobiles, where the wrencl'i has to be transported from place to place, and-which shall be inexpensive to nmnu'l'acture and easy to keep in repair.
Further objects and ad 'antages oi the invention will appear hereinafter.
' Reference is to be had to the accon'lpanyinc, drawing, in whicb--- Figure is aside elevation of a double socket wrench constructed in :urcordance with this invention'; Fig. .3 an end view of one end. and Fig. 3 is an end view of the other end thereof.
The wrench is shown as consisting of a forging all made in a single integral piece. It has a central transverse bar and-is provided at the ends thereof with two bars 7) at right angles to the central bar and constitutinghand holds. At the outer ends of these bars are. two bars parallel with the cent "at bar and extending inwardly substantially to a point opposite the center thereof, At this point; these two bars are bent at right angles so as'to 't'orm shanks (I extending outwardly, and in axial aliueua-nt with each other, and with the center of the central bar a. Thus a double crank is ]')1.'()Vlt'lttl. ()u the ends of these shanks are dissimilar sockets c and f. These sockets are integral with-the shanks and in fact all ot'the above specified parts are integral with each other and formed from a single 'l'orgine'. The several angles are all shown as right. angles. The socket c is shown as of hexagonal t'orm inside, and the socket of square form. Itwill be understood of course that these forms may be varied and that the two sockets may be of the same form but of different sizes.
An implement t'tlIlSil'tlCiOtl as above described is a great convenience. piu'ticularly to automolul *q and can be nninuiimrtiu'cd at very small expense. it has no parts that.
are likely to become broken in use. and none whatever that can he lost. It is lighter, and takcs'up no more room. than the ordinary brace which is s metimes provided l'or this purpose.
by the list. of the two throws and the pro; vision of the two bars 7), these can be used as hand-holds, 'However, if desired, a removable head can be employed which wan be placed in either of the sockets to serve for the purpose ot the usual head or knob with which a carpentefis braces are pro- Vided.
\Vhilc l have illustrated aml described a preferred embodiment of the invention, I am aware that many-modifications can be made thcrt-in by any person skilled in the art without departing from the s ope of the invention as expressed in the claim. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction herein shown and dcscribed but \Vhat I do claim is- As an article of manufacture a socket wrench having two shanks in axial aline-.
meat with each other, hand holds between them [or operating the wrench. two integral wrench sockets in axial alinei'neut on the ends of said shanks and of diil'ercnt internal size or shape but of the same external size and circular in shape, whereby said sockets may be applied to nuts or bolt-heads oi dilt'erent sizes or shapes, and a removable steadying head having a circular socket shaped and adapted to receive aml fit the outside surfaces of the ends of both of said Shanks, so as to be rotatable thereon.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALLAN C. SARGELT.
