Description

dni-ted* gtst-re GEORGE W. BISHOP, OF SARA'IOGA SPRINGS, NEW YORK.
, Leners Patent No. 105,299, daad .my 12,1870.
The Schedule referred'to in these Letters `Patent and making part of the eamo To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BISHOP, of-Saratoga Springs, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in WVindow-sa'sh Fasteners; and I do here' by declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawin making a part of this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
-Figure 1 of the drawing is a front view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same.
Figure 3 is a horizontal central section of the same.
Figures 4 and 5 are details.
My invent-ion relates to means for fastening and adjusting window-sashes,- and consists in improvements and additions to my patent ot' May 31, 1870, by which it is intended to make the fastening and adjusting of window-sashcs more easy of accomplishment than by the means described in my said patent.
A'of the drawing represents the upper sash of a window, and B the lower sash thereof.
The letter C representsa parting strip or bead, which is attached to the inside of the window-frame, and serves to separate the upper from the lower sash in the manner shown.
D represents the window-frame.
E represents a pulley afxed to the frame D,ove1`l which is passed and operated the metallic band F.
This band is attached, at its upper end, to the sash A, while its lower end is pendent in the grooveAG,
formed in the side of the lower sasll.
The letters a represent pins upon the band F, for the purpose hereinafter mentioned. g H represents a latch, pivoted, at Yits lower end, to
the side of sash B, as shown, while its upper end,
turned to the right in the shape of an elbow, is cut ont in the form of jaws, which clasp the baud F on its attened side, either above or below one ofthe pins a, as may be desirable.
K represents a coiled spring iuclosed in a metallic case, and arranged upon the top of sash B, as shown.4
The oiiee of this spring is to operate against the inner side of latch H, and force said latch against the,
side of the frame when desirable ys o to do.
I make' small openings in the top of the case that holds spring-K, in which'the piu on the end of dog c may be inserted at will, thereby holding theV latch H awayfrom thc frame.
The letters n represent apertures in the frame, in which-the point or jaws .of the latcbd are inserted automatically by means of the spring K Vas the lower 'sash is raised or lowered, thereby holding the same securely in position at the point desired. These openings may be increased at will.
As the lower sash is raised the lower end of band F is passed downward in the groove G.
/lo raise the lower sash without movingvthe upper one, I place the jaws of the latch above thc pins a upon the belt, while, to raise the lower sash, and move the upper one downward at the same time, I place the jaws of the latch under a pin, a, .and move the lower sash upward.
I usually place a duplicate of the lifting and fast eniug apparatus, above described, -upon the opposite side of the. window, but this 'is not always required.
What Iclaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the latch H, spring K, audits perforated metallic ease, with the dog c and band F, as herein described.
In testimony that I claim the above, I Ahave hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
' GEOIVtGE W. BISHOP.
