FOLDING CROSS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT HUGH SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Folding Cross, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates generally to folding crosses, and more particularly is directed to an improved manner of mounting the two members which make up the cross.

. The principal object of my invention is to provide a new and improved folding cross as an article of jewelry adapted to be worn as a watch charm, the structure being provided with a pivot-ed member whereby it may be hung from a chain, this pivoted member being adapted to engage one of the pieces of the cross in order to bring it out of register with the other piece.

A further object of my invention is to provide a new and improved means cooperating with the two parts of the cross whereby the position of the normally transversely extending portion is determined when positioned in register with the first piece and also when extending transversely thereof.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description thereof proceeds, all of which is particularly pointed out and included in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of ref erence denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 shows the structure in folded position; Fig. 2 is a side view thereof Fig. 3 is a front view with a portion of the structure removed, and Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the parts in a difierent position.

The cross is made up of the longitudinally extending portion 1 and transversely extending portion 2, the longitudinally extending portion 1 being made up of side pieces 1*, 1 with an intermediate piece 1 adapted to serve as a spacing means, the three pieces being adapted to be held together in any suitable manner, preferably by means of rivets 3.

tween these pieces by means of a pivotal connection 5, the ring or suspending device being adapted tobe swung about the said point of pivotal support into position between the parts 1 and 1 The second portion 2 of the cross is of a dimension adapted to be positioned between the parts 1 and 1 when the cross is in folded position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the intermediate point of the portion 2 being in pivotal engagement with the first portion 1 by means of a pin or rivet 6, as shown particularly in Figs. 3 and 4, the said pivotal supporting means enabling the second portion 2 to be swung from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 4;.

In order to enable the second portion to be so moved or swung, the ring or suspending device 4 is turned between the parts 1 1 of the first portion 1 into engagement with the side of the second portion 2 whereby this second portion is moved into the position shown in Fig. 3 so that it may be conveniently brought to the position shown in Fig. 4 by engaging the end of the portion 2 with the finger.

In order to determine the two positions of the second portion 2 with respect to the first portion 1, cooperating parts are provided which include a pin or stud 7 extending between the parts 1 and 1 of the first portion 1, this pin or stud passing through an arcuate slot 8 adjacent the point of pivotal support of the second portion 2, the length of the slot being such that the pin or projection 7 engages one end of the slot when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 4 and engages the other end of the slot when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1, whereby the second portion 2 may be moved to either position and when in either of such positions is capable of movement only in one direction therefrom.

l/Vhile I have shown the preferred form of my ornamental cross in the drawings, it is obvious that many modifications thereof may be made in producing such an article, it being clear that the first portion 1 of the cross may be made of a single piece rather than of three pieces as shown. It is also evident that the relative positioning of the pin 7 and the slot 8 with respect to the pivotal support 6 may also be made in crosses of different sizes and made of different materials, such variations being ineluded within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As an article of jewelry, a folding cross comprising two members in pivotal relation with each other at points intermediate the ends of each, one member being adapted to be moved into a position registering longitudinally with the first member or into a position transverse thereof, and a pivoted suspending element carried by the first member, the said element being movable about its support into engagement with the second member when the second member is in position registering with the first one, whereby the second member may be forced out of such registering position.

2. As a new article of jewelry, a cross comprising two members in pivotal engagement with each other at points intermediate the ends of each, one member being adapted to be moved into a position registering longitudinally with the first member or into a position transverse thereof, the second member being provided with an arcuate slot, the first member being provided with a pin entering the said slot, the end walls of the slot being adapted to engage the pin when the said second member is in a position registering with the first member or extending transversely thereof, whereby such pin and slot engagement determines such position.
