Be it known that I, RoBnnT M. PARKS', a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the lcounty of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to devices for protecting or covering the ends of hat pins where they project through a hat.
One object of the invention is to prevent dangerously projecting hat pins from injuring persons.`
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved structure of this class which will prevent the hat pin-from being lost by slipping out of the hat.
With the above and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described,
illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specificaly set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal sect-ional. view of the improved device. F ig. 2 is a plan view.
In this hat pin protector there is employed a body 1 which consists of a major portion 10 of frusto conical shape with a hernispherical base and a minor portion 11, also of frusto conical shape and the base of the minor portion equaling the top of the major portion and contacting therewith. These two portions are held together by means of a suitable shell 12 which may be metallic and spun thereover or may be plated directly on the portion. This shell may also be of a cement preparation so that it may be ornamented. Projecting from the smaller end of the shell and formed integrally with the minor portion 11 is a truste-conical button 13, the major base of which engages against the hat material indicated at 14 when the device is in position.
Extending through the portions 10, k11,
and 13 is an axially disposed bore 15 adapted for the reception of a hat pin point 16.
-In the minor port-ion 11 the bore is enlarged as at 17 for the reception of a tube 18 of soft rubber or other'elastic material and extending from this enlarged portion is a slot/19 wherein is pivoted a lever 20 having a downwardly turned end 21 which normally bears against the tube 18 adjacent the smaller end of the body portion 11. This lever is held in normal position by means of a sprin 22 beneath the opposite end of the lever rom the portion 21 and forces its opposite end upward. Secured to the end of the lever opposite the portion 21 is a 'link 23 on the outer end of which is mounted a button 24 which passes through a suitable opening 25 formed in the shell 12.
In the operation of this form of the device the but-ton 24 is depressed which raises the end 21 of the lever clear of the tube 18. This permits the point 16 to 'be inserted in the bore 15 whereupon the button 24 is released. The spring 22 will then force ,this button outward and will cause the end 2l to move in and force the tube 18 firmly against t-he pin 16 thereby preventing movement of the pin'by frictional engagement with said tube.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.

A hat pin protector comprising a body portion having a bore centrally therein terminating short of one end, said bore having an elongated portion of greater lateral dimension than the body of the bore, a flexible tube held in said elongated portion of said bore, an overhanging shoulder engaging said tube to hold said tube from movement, said body having a slot opposite the enlarged portion of said bore, a lever pivotally mounted in said slot, a downwardly bent end on said lever contacting with the flexible tube, a spring mounted on said body portion and connected to the opposite end substantially the same size as said push butof said pivoted lever to urge said downton to act as a gulde. 10,
