TINTTED STATES PATENT onrion.
MICHAEL PRICE FRENCH, 0F RIVERTON, INDIANA.
HINGE CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed January 5, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL P. FRENCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverton, in the county of Sullivan and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Hinge Construction; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful hinge construction.
An object of the invention is the production of a hinge construction adapted mainly for use in connection with gates and the like.
Further, another object of the invention is to provide a construction of hinge, whereby the gate will automatically close.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the improved gate constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a view, showing the gate open. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line et4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing 1 and 2 designate posts between which the gate 3 swings. The gate 3 is of the usual construction, and is hinged to the post 2, as shown at 4 and 5. The upper hinge 4 comprises a loop 6, which is carried by the post 2, and the arm 7 of the gate, which arm is provided with a downwardly extending portion to be received by the loop. The lower hinge 5 comprises the forked members 8, which cooperate with the vertical portions 9 of the arms 10, which project from opposite sides of the post 2. The forked members 8 are constructed of a single piece of heavy wire material, the ends beyond the looped forks are twisted about the body of the wire material as shown at 11. The body of the wire material is bent upon itself as shown at 12 to form the loop 13, which passes-through the upright 14 of the gate, as shown in the sectional view of Fig. 3. This loop portion is anchored in position by the staple 15. At

the point where the loop of the body of the wire material passes through the upright 1A a wedge 16 is arranged, so as to hold the wire material rigidly with relation to the gate. It will be noted that when the gate is swung open in one direction or the other, the outer end of the 'gate rises, thus obviating the possibility of the gate dragging. Furthermore it will be observed that by the rising of the outer end of the gate as the same opens, it will automatically close.
Any suitable latch may be employed in conjunction with this gate.
The inventionhaving been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is In combination with a pair of arms projecting from opposite sides of a fence post provided with upright portions, a hinge member consisting of a single length of wire material bent upon itself to form a loop passing through an upright of a gate, means anchoring said loop to a portion of said gate, the remaining parts of said wire material being bent at right angles adjacent said upright of the gate and extending laterally in opposite directions, and again bent at right angles to form arms lying in a plane parallel with said loop, each of said last named arms being bent to form a pair of loops arranged at anglesto one another, thereby constituting a V-shaped fork to cooperate with each upright portion of the first arms, thereby constituting a hinge con nection offset from each side of the fence post at the bottom portion of the gate, the wire material beyond said forks being coiled about said second arms, and a loose hinge connection for the upper end of the gate substantially intermediate the same and said fence post, said hinge connections at the upper portion of the gate being arranged relative to the lower hinge connection, so that the gate will automatically close.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
