To all whom t may concer/a Be it known that I, FRANK M. ULMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Advertising Device, o-f which the following is a specification.

The device forming the subject-matter of this application, is an advertising structure which, in addition to its display functions, will afford a support for a spool of thread or the like, means being provided whereby the spool, as it rotates, will cause the production of a sound, whereby the attention of the user will be attracted to the structure from which the thread or twine is being withdrawn.

A further object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby a supporting frame may be held pivotally connected with a displaymember.

A further object of the invention is to provide novel means for supporting the spools for rotation.

lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings,-Figure l shows the invention in front elevation; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the receptacle which constitutes a portion of the display structure; and Fig. 4 is a fragmental end elevation of one of the spools.

In carrying out the invention there is provided a supporting structure, embracing a frame 1, of any desired form, the lower ends of the frame being free, and being resilient. The lower ends of the frame 1 terminate in suspension eyes 3, adapted to be engaged by hooks 4, formed upon a receptacle 6, the hooks 4 preferably facing each other, as shown in Fig. 3. The upper portion of the frame 1 is equipped with a suspension eye 2.

The receptacle 6 is a composite structure, and includes a tubular body 5, in which the hooks 4 are mounted. The receptacle further includes a pair of removable closures 7 adapted to be assembled with the open ends Speccaton of Letters Patent.

although not necessarily, takes the form of a Y pickle.

The closures 7 may be assembled with the body portion 5 of the receptacle 6 in a variety of ways. In the present instance, the closures 7 are equipped with tubular flanges 8, adapted to be telescoped inside of the body portion 5 of the receptacle. Supporting plates 9 extend transversely of the closures 7, the plates 9 being terminally connected with the flanges 8. To the inner faces of the plates 9, arched brackets 10 are secured. Shafts 11 are provided, the outer ends of which are secured to the outer ends of the closures 7, as shown at 12, the shafts 11 projecting through the supporting plates 9, and through the intermediate portions of the brackets 10, the free ends of the shafts 11 projecting well into the tubular body 5. The innerends of the shafts 11 are equipped with bosses 14. j

Journaled for rotation upon the shafts 11, and retained upon the shafts by the bosses 14, are spoolsv 1 5, for which the intermediate portions of the brackets 11 constitute thrust bearings. The contents 16 of the spools 15 may be passed outwardly thro-ugh openings 17 formed in the body 5 of the receptacle, adjacent the free ends of the shafts 11.

Secured to the inner face of the body 5, adjacent the free ends of the shafts 11, are resonant members, preferably taking the form of bells 18. To the inner ends of the spools 15, strikers are removably secured. Each striker, as shown in Fig. 4, preferably includes a body 19, from which projects a resilient arm 21, carrying a knob 22, adapted to strike one of the bells 18, when the spool 15 is rotated.

Fitted within the frame 1, and conforming closely^ to the shape of the frame, is a plate 23, which may be held in place within the frame by means of clips 24, secured to the frame, and engaging opposite sides of the plate. The plate 23 may be fashioned from any desired material, and upon the plate, and upon the receptacle 6, may be inscribed advertising matter of any sort. The plate, in addition to its function as an advertising medium, acts as a brace for the frame 1.

In practical operation, when the contents 16 of the spools 15 are unreeled, the spools of course, will be rotated, the strikers 19-21-22 striking the bells 18, whereby the attention of the user of the device will, be drawn to the advertising matter which the device carries. The interlocking elements 3 and 4 which serve to connect the frame l with the receptacle 6, afford a pivotal mounting for the receptacle 6, so that the same may swing laterally, permitting the contents 1G of the spools l5 to be withdrawn, without fraymg the contents of the spools, through Contact with the. edges of the openings 17 in the receptacle.

In connecting the frame l with the receptacle 6, the plate 23 is disengaged from between the clips 24, whereupon the free ends of the frame l may be sprung together, so that the hooks 4 which are carried by the receptacle 6, may be engaged with the eyes 3 which are carried by the lower ends of the frame l. The plate 23 is then mounted in place within the frame l, the plate 23 coperating with the frame, to spread the free ends of the frame apart, and to maintain the eyes 3 pivotally engaged with the hooks 4, the construction being such that the receptacle 6 cannot be disconnected from the frame l, without removing the plate 23.

Having thus described the invention,what is claimed is In a device of the class described, a renaled for rotation upon the shaft and adapted to engage the bracket, the contents of the spool being passed outwardly through the opening in the body; a resonant member .secured to the interior of the body; and a striker removably secured to the spool independently of the body and adapted to engage the resonant member whenthe spool is rotated; and means upon the body for sus- -pending the same.
