To all azhom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Parts, of th'ecity of Wilmington; in the'State of Delaware, leather mau ul'acturer, have :invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Leather; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct descript-ion of the same. a
My invention consists in a new process or method of treating buti leather, so as toproduce an article having a close resemblance, in appearance and qnali ties, to morocco, and applicable to. the manufacture of shoes and to other purposes for vwhich morocco is cmployed, and which is not liable to crack or wear white, as the ordinary patent leather does. The essence of the invention lies in the order and the character of The ordinary patent leather is made by the application of a heavy coat of varnish or composition'to the bud leather,- and, being finished dry, with no oil,
'it will crack in cold weather, and is not 'well suited for shoe-leather on that account, and because it wears.
white; owing to the varnish stock. j
My process is as follows: j After buifing I dye the leather of the desired 00101; By reason of the color being thus applied before the thinner coating of the being applied to 'muiyed After dyeing I apply a composition, consisting of {linseed-oil thinned with benzine, and contain ng ap; 'propriate coloring matter. I lay this composition on with a. brush in very thin coats, so thin as entirely to prevent that hardening of the leather which occursin the ordinary manufacture of patent leather. M y coating dries in about one day, thus saving three or four days over the common process in the drying alone. I next oil the leather-on the flesh side, and wet it before graining.- I then grain wet, getting afine pehbly surface, and-finish by oiling, giving the leather almost the exa'ct appearance of moroccc,,and making it soft and pliable, and suited for the manufacture of shoes.
It is more durable than morocco. I v Having thus fully described my invention- WhatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is'- The process. or method l iereinbefoi'e described of manufacturing buff leather in imitation of morocco by dyeing the leather afterhuifing, thenapplying the surface composition, and, finally graining wet and oiling; all in the order and manner-set forth.
