MAGAZINE-HAMMER.
Specification of Letters .Patent.
Patented Feb. 4,1913.
Application filed May 17, 1912. Serial No. 697,961.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDRICK F. NEL- SON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Ashland, in the county of J ackson, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magazine- Hammers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to magazine hammers or tools.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a hammer or hatchet or other similar tool with a suitable mechanism whereby a quantity of nails or the like may be successively positioned against the head of the tool and held thereagainst to permit of the same being driven home by one blow of the tool.
Another object of the invention is to provide a mechanism of the character described which includes a novel means for locking the nails against movement when one of said nails is being positioned against the head.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tool for the purpose set forth which includes a magazine of novel construction which is adapted to be carried by the operators arm so as to automatically discharge the nails into a feed tube from which the nails are successively drawn.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a magazine tool of the character described which is composed of a minimum number of parts, is therefore simple in constructionand is cheap to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the" form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the left hand side of a magazine tool constructed in accordance with my invention, the parts thereof being shown in their normal or inoperative positions, Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof, Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of the right hand side of the tool, the parts being shown in their operative positions, Fig. 4 is a similar view but showing the operative position of the latch releasing lever, Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view through the tool, the parts being shown in their operative positions, Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1, Fig. 7 is a detail bottom plan view showing the nail extractor in its operative position, Fig. 8 is a detail transverse sectional view taken on the line 88 of Fig. 3, Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the anvil plate showing the latch associated therewith, Fig. 10 is a perspective view of the latch, Fig. 11 is a detail perspective view of the front end of the latch releasing lever, Fig 12 is a perspective view of the discharge tube, Fig. 13 is a detail view showing the means employed for holding the actuating lever in its normal position, Fig. 14 is a detail perspective view of the magazine, and 'Fig. 15 is a perspective view of the trigger.
Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings. L
Referring to the drawings, A designates a tool of any preferred construction, and this tool includes the usual handle 5 and head 6, the latter being formed with the usual ball 7 and blade 8. Extending inwardly from the end of the handle opposite the head is a longitudinally disposed inclined bore 9 which communicates at its inner end with a recess 10 that is centrally formed in the underface of said handle. Disposed within the bore 9 is a tapering feed tube 11, the larger end or mouth 11 thereof projecting beyond the end of the handle 5, and secured to the mouth is a coupling 12 to which is connected the discharge end 13 of a magazine, which is designated as a Whole by the reference letter B.
Detachably mounted Within the recess 10 of the handle is a detachable discharge tube 14. This tube is of tapering formation, the larger end thereof fitting over the smaller end of the feed tube 11 and the smaller end 1 1 being disposed below the plane of the handle 5 and in spaced relation to the ball 7 of the head. The underside of this tube is formed with a longitudinal slot 15 which extends throughout the entire length of the tube. This tube is held in position by means of opposed clamps l616 of any suitable construction.
Arranged within the feed tube 11 is a longitudinally disposed spiral wire 17 by means of which the nails are prevented from becoming jammed within the tube while passing therethrough. As soon as the nails leave the lower or discharge end of the feed tube 11 they enter the discharge tube 10 and the pointed ends of said nails drop by gravity through the slot 15 of said discharge tube, the heads of said nails being supported by the tube. In order to frictionally hold the nails from discharging themselves from the small end of the discharge tube 10, a flat spring 18 is secured upon the upper face of the discharge end of said tube. This spring is longitudinally disposed, and has its ends downwardly bent at right angles and extending through suitable openings formed in the tube to form spaced front and rear stops 18 and 18 respectively.
The invention further comprises an anvil plate, which is designated as a whole by the reference numeral 19. This plate is of angular construction and includes a horizontal arm 20 and a vertical arm 21, the horizontal arm being connected to the handle 5 above the discharge end 14* of the discharge tube 14 by any. suitable means, and the vertical arm 21 being disposed intermediate the ball 7 of said head 6 and discharge end 14. Depending from the right hand side of the horizontal arm 20 and adjacent the vertical arm 21 is a lug 22 which constitutes a stop for a lever hereinafter to be described. The lower portion of the vertical arm 21 is depressed forwardly to form a resultant longitudinal nail-receiving seat 23 and a conse quent shoulder 24. Formed in the arm 21 directly above the shoulder 24 is a centrally depressed slot 25.
A plate 26 is disposed against the forward face of the vertical arm 21, and this plate is connected at its upper end to the arm 21 to permit of said plate having a vertical swinging movement. The. plate normally bears against the arm 21, and is yieldably held in such relation by means of a flat spring 27. This plate carries a rearwardly extending flange 28 which projects into the slot 25 of the arm, the lower edge 28* of the flange registering with the shoulder 24. Projecting from the edge of the flange 28 is a cam 29 having a stop shoulder 30 formed thereon and disposed slightlv above the lower end 28 of said flange. Extending laterally from the plate 26 is a finger 31 which projects beyond the side of the vertical arm 21, and is adapted to be engaged by a means hereinafter to be described to swing the plate 26 outwardly.
In order toextract a nail from the discharge tube 10 and position the same against the seat 23 of the vertical arm 21, the following mechanism is provided: Centrally secured to each side of the handle 5 is a clip 32, and these clips extend in the same 'general direction as the ball 7 to form spaced ears 3333. A transverse pivot pin 34 connects these ears, and an actuating lever 35 is fulcrumed upon this pin adjacent its rear end to form a consequent long arm 36 and short arm 37. The forward end of this lever normally operates against that side of the vertical arm 21 adjacent the finger '31,
and this lever carries at its forward end a laterally extending cam actuating anvil lever 38 which works against the front face of the vertical arm 21, and has its rear end 38 hooked around said arm. Extending in the opposite direction from the front end of the lever are spaced upper and lower flanges 39 and 40 respectively, and carried by the forward ends of these flanges is a vertically disposed pin 41.
Pivoted upon a transverse pin 42 carried by the clips 32 is a rearwardly extending trigger 43 which includes a finger-pier? 44 that is normally held out of engagement with the short arm 37 of the actuating lever 35 by means of a spring 45. This spring is centrally coiled around one end of the pin 34, and has one end fixedly secured to the handle 5 by means of a screw 46, the other end of the spring bearing against the fingerpiece 44. In order to yieldably hold the forward end of the actuating lever 35 upwardly so that the upper flange 39 will engage the stop 22, there is provid d a spring 47 which is centrally coiled around the other end of the pin 34, and has one end fixedly secured to the handle by means of the screw 46, the other end of said spring extending rearwardly and having its end portion bent over the short arm 37 of said lever. It will thus be observed that when the trigger is raised against the tension of the spring 44, said trigger will bear against the short arm 37 of the actuating lever 15 and cause the forward end thereof to be shifted downwardly along the vertical arm 21. As the lever thus moves the cam actuating finger 38 will ride over the cam 29 and cause the plate 26 to be swung outwardly against the tension of the spring 27, until said finger 38 is shifted below the lower face 30 of said cam. The
A nail extracting element 48 is fulcrumed intermediate its ends upon the pin 41, one end of said element extending laterally through a slot 35 formed in the forward end of the actuating lever 35 and terminating in a hook 49 which is arranged to cooperate with the seat 23 of the vertical arm 21. The hook end of the element 48 is formed with a pair of diverging teeth A lever 51 is pivotally connected, as at 52,
to the forward end of the trigger 43 and the other end of this lever is slidably mounted between the forward end of the actuating lever 35 and the pin 41. Carried by the forward end of this lever is an oflset rack 53 which is adapted to engage the teeth 50. of the element 48 and actuate said element.
In the operation of my invention as thus far described, it will be observed that when it is desired to extract a nail, the fingerpiece 44 is raised and as a result, the lever 51 will be actuated previous to the actuating lever 35. Upon movement of the lever 51, the rack 53 which is carried thereby will swing the nail extractor 48 so as to cause the hook 49 thereof to engage a nail from the discharge tube 10 and position said nail against the vertical arm 21. Upon continued upward movement of the finger-piece 44, the actuating lever will be moved as above described, and as a result, the nail thus extracted will be carried down to the seat 23 of said vertical arm 21, the head of the nail being positioned against the striking face formed by the seat 24 and the lower face of the cam actuating finger 38. It is to be observed in this connection that as the levers are thus moved, the cam 29 will be depressed so that when said cam is returned to its normal position as above described, the actuating lever 35 will be retained in its operative position so as to permit the nail to be given its initial blc .v. As soon as the trigger is released, the coil spring 44 will cause said trigger to assume its normal position, thereby actuating the lever 51 so that the forward end thereof will engage the finger 31 of the plate 26 and thereby retract the cam 29 against the tension of the spring 27. As soon ,as the cam is thus retracted the spring 47 will cause the actuating lever 35 and of course the lever 51 to be returned to their normal positions ready to extract the next nail.
In order to check the discharge of the nails from the discharge tube 14, the following mechanism is employed: Attached to the tube 14 is a pair of spaced ears 5454, and supported by these cars is a swinging looking element 55. This element is longitudinally disposed and is adapted, when the trigger 43 is actuated, to extend across the slot 60 15 of said tube, the free longitudinal edge of said element being formed with a series of teeth 56 for receiving the nails. In order to swing this element when the trigger 43 is actuated, there is provided a spring 57 which is secured at one end to the center of the trigger 43, and has its other end extending through a laterally extending eye 58 formed on said element. It will thus be observed that when the finger-piece 44 of the trigger 1s raised, the forward end of said trigger wlllbe depressed, and as a result, will carry with it the spring 57 which, through the medium of the eye 58, will swing the element 55 laterally so as to engage the nails which depend through the slot 15 of the discharge tube 14, and thereby hold said nails against movement while the nail in the discharge end 14 of said tube is being extracted.
After the nail has been positioned within the seat 23 as above explained, the hammer is given a swing so as to insert the point of the nail into the wood, and upon the release of the trigger 43 the spring 45 will return the same to its normal position, thereby permitting the spring 47 to return the actuating lever 35 to its normal position. As the trigger 43 is thus released, the lever 51 will be shifted forwardly as above described, and as a result, the nail extracting element 48 will be swung rearwardly so as to disengage itself from the nail.
The magazine B is formed from a single piece of canvas and is centrally folded longitudinally to form opposed sides 5959. One end of the magazine is closed, as at 60, while the other or discharge end 13 is left open for engagement with the coupling 12 i as above described. Secured to the edge of one of the walls 59 is a rod 61, and secured to the edge of the other wall is a rod, which is indicated as a Whole by the reference nu- ,meral 62. The rod 62 consists of a pair of sections 6363 which are hingedly connected, as at 64, one of the sections being pivotally connected at its outer end, as at 65, to the rod 61. The outer end of the other section 63 is pivoted, as at 66, to a sleeve 67 which is slidably mounted upon the outer end of the rod 61. It will thus be observed that in order to insert nails into the magazine, the sections 63 may be shifted laterally from the rod 61, such movement being permitted by the joint 64 and sleeve 67. In order to lock the section 63 to the rod 61 so as to close the magazine, there is provided a catch 68 which is rotatably supported centrally upon the rod 61 and is adapted for engagement with the rod 62. Attached to the discharge end 13 of the magazine is a suspending loop 69 for engagement over the wrist of the operator, and secured to the opposite end of the magazine is a pair of supporting straps 70 which are'adapted to engage over the fore-arm of the operator. It will thus be observed that by means of the loops 69 and straps 70 the magazine will be supported from the arms of the operator so as to readily feed the nails from the magazine into the feed tube 11 from whence they tracted nail to the seat of the anvil platewill readily pass into the discharge tube 14 as above described.
