To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN V. CRABILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plattsmouth, in the county of Cass and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sharpening Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to improvements in sharpening devices of that class used for sharpening or pointing jewelers peg wood, pencils or the like.

The object of the present invention is to provide a. device of this character which may be constructed at a small cost from spring wire and sheet metal, and which may be readily fastened to the edge of a work bench, table or desk.

My improved sharpening device comprises a body 1, of angular shape, and constructed of sheet metal and spring wire. This body has a vertically disposed attaching port-ion 2, and a horizontally projecting supporting portion 3, carrying a guide member 4, and a. resilient upper portion 5, carrying a cutting knife or blade 6, disposed above and in converging relation wit-h respect to the guide 4. In constructin the body, a single piece of wire is preferabdy employed and this piece is bent adjacent to its center to form a U- shaped member 7, which is covered with a sheet metal plate8, the edges of the latter being rolled around the member 7 as indicated at 9. The portions of the wire projecting from the upright portions of the member 7 are then bent substantially at right angles to form horizontally arranged supporting arms or members 10 and the two portions of the wire are then bent to provide coils 11, the extremities of the wire projecting from the coils to provide the knife carrying members 5. These members or arms 5 are bent upon themselves as shown at 12, to form receiving sockets for oppositely projecting tongues 18, formed on the ends of the knife 6, whereby the latter is removably secured to and between the arms or members 5. The upper portion of the metal sheet or plate 8 is bent and formed with two longitudinal slits, the latter providing a. central member or tongue which forms the guide 4, and two side portions 14, which latter are rolled around the horizontal memhere or arms 10, as will be understood on reference to Fig. 3.

The upright portion of the metal sheet 8 covering the U shaped member 7 is formed with openings 15, to receive screws, nails or other fastenings, whereby the upright or attaching portions of the body of the device may be secured to the edge of a work bench, table or desk.

In using the device, the peg stick, pencil or other object to be sharpened, or pointed, is inserted between the knife and its opposing guide 4, and then withdrawn so that the knife will cut it. By repeating this operation, and varying the angle of the peg or other object with respect to the guide and knife, any desired shape may be quickly given the end of the object.

By constructing the device in this manner, that is from sheet metal and resilient wire, it may be produced at a small cost, and may be readily attached to a work bench, or the like so as to be always within reach and ready for use.

I claim:

1. A sharpening device of the character described comprising a body having an attaching portion, and arms extending therefrom, a guide between the said arms, a knife, and spring supports therefor attached to the said arms, said knife being movable toward and from said guide, said knife and said guide converging toward said attaching portion.
