Description

A. J. PLUMMER.
PHOTOGRAPHER'S PRINTING MASK.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 16. 1912.

(lllllll l nHHHIllIlI WITNESSES 46% v I XM J I $153M ALBERT J'. PLUMMER, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
PHOTOGRAPHER/S PRINTING-MASK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 16, Q12. Serial No. 715,356.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. PLUMMER,
acitiz'en of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and fitate ofNew York, have invented certrain new and useful Improvements in Photographers Printing-Masks, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to masks or frames used by photographers and others in printing from negatives on sensitized cards or paper, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class into which a negative and a sensitized card or a sheet of paper of predetermined form and dimensions may be quickly and easily inserted and securely held therein, while the printing is being done, in an ordinary frame such as a blue rint frame or similar device; a further ob ectbeing to provide a mask or frame of the class specified by means of which a uniform margin of predetermined dimen sions will be formed entirely around the picture printed on the card or paper, and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my invention are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and inwhich Figure 1 is a back view of my improved photographers mask or frame;-Fig. 2 a front view thereof ;-Fig'. 3 a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the sensitized card or paper and the negative both in position in the mask or frame ;-Fig. 4 a section on the line 44 of Fig. 3, and on an enlarged scale ;Fig. 5 a section on the line .5-5 of Fig. 3, and on an enlarged scale, and Fig. 6 a fragmentary View similar to Fig. 3, but showing a modification.
In the practice of my invention I provide a mask or frame a composed of fibrous material such as card board, and also composed of two sheets b and c, and the sheet b is provided with a central-rectangular opening 1) and the sheet 0 with 2. correspondmg opening 0 of less dimensions than the opening 6 whereby a flange a is formed which extends entirely around the central opening d in the mask or frame formed by the openings 5 and c in the separate parts I) and c of said mask or frame.
The back of the mask or frame is provided at the corners with triangular keepers e which are pasted or glued thereto in such manner as to leave or form pockets 6 designed to receive the corners of a negative f, which, in practice, is placed on the back of the mask or frame, as clearly indicated in the drawing, and which is securely held in the pockets 6 of the keepers e and the dimensions of the negative f are always greater.
than thedimensions of the central opening in the part c of the mask or frame.
The sensitized card or paper 9 on which the picture or print is to be formed is of the Patented Feb. 4,1913.
same dimensions as the opening in the part b of the mask or frame, and when placed in position said card or paper fits in said opening, as clearly indicated or shown in the drawing. and the thickness of the card or paper 9 is preferably such as to correspond with the thickness of the part b of the mask or frame.
'hen the negative and the sensitized card or paper have been placed in the mask or frame, the process of printing is proceeded with in the usual manner, and this may be done in a frame similar to the well known blue printing frame, or any other device of this class.
In the modification shown in Fig. 6, 'the keepers e are provided centrally of their diagonal edges with the recesses e which facilitate the insertion of the corners of the negative f into the pockets 6 of said keepers, and this is the only difference between the construction shown in Fig. 6, and that shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive.
It will be understood that the difference in the dimensions of the openings 17 and c and the separate parts of the mask or frame form a groove or space which extends entirely around the central opening in said mask or frame, and the dimensions of which determine the width of the: margin around the printed card or sheet, and the width of this margin may be regulated by increasing the width of said groove or space, as will be readily understood, and it wilt also be understood that my improved mask or frame may be made up in different sizes. or in any size to correspond with the various styles and classes of cameras now in use.
My improved photographers mask or frame may be made of any suitable material,
and While I have shown the central open-,
ing therein as rectangular in form, it will be understood that other forms for said opening may be adapted, and other changes in and modifications of vthe construct-ion herein described may be made, within the scope of the appended claim 'Without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my'invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A photographers mask consisting of a frame sheet of thin opaque material provided with a central opening around which Copies of this patent may' be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents. r
and in one side of said frame sheet is a groove adapted to receive a sensitized card or sheet, the other side of the frame sheet being provided at the corners thereof with pockets adapted to receive the corners of a negative and by which said negative is held in position and positioned with reference to the sensitized card or sheet.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 15th day of August 1912.
