UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN SWASEY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PROCESSES OF PRINTING PHOTOGRAPHS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent 'No. 171 ,062, dated December 14, 1875 application filed December 29, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN SWASEY, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented Improvements in Printing Photographic Pictures; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to the printing of photographic pictures from two negatives at a single operation; and it consists in placing the negative of the ornamental background on the collodion side of the original negative, as hereinafter described.
I use a negative background, photographed upon any transparent substance, as gelatiue, collodion, or paper, or the negative may be produced from copper-plates, lithographs, or wood-cuts, by the use of printers ink, so that this background-negative can be placed on the collodion side of the original negative in a printing-frame, and printed at one operaiion. f
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Ais anegative, taken in the usual manner upon glass or any suitable substance, and B is the background negative, which is produced upon any suitable transparent or translucent substance, either by photographing or printing, as may be desired. This backgroundnegative is then placed upon the collodion side of the original negative in a proper frame, and when exposed to the suns rays will produce both the original picture and the desired background upon the properly prepared sensitive surface 0.
In some cases the whole of the backgroundnegative may contain a properly prepared scene, as, for example, a parlor scene, which, if taken from a steel engraving, copper-plate, wood-cut, or other form of picture, may, in printing with the original negative, be made to produce a representation of stippliug, etching, or cut, that is employed to make the scene, so that all parts of the original shall show this peculiarity, and the photograph will have the appearance of a steel engraving or wood-cut.
I am aware that tracing-paper and other translucent substances have been used in the production of backgrounds for photographic pictures, as described in the Photographic News, Vol. 11, page 175, by S. G. B. Wollaston but this is not my invention.
Having thus described my in ven tion, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The described process of printing photographic pictures with ornamental backgrounds by placing a background negative or film entirely over the picture or original negative and next to the collodion side thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal.
BENJAMIN SWASEY.
