To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD R. BURKE, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco- Pipes, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to tobacco pipes, and the object thereof is to provide a pipe of this class with improved means for cleaning the stem and keeping it clean.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a sectional side view of a tobacco pipe involving my invention Fig. 2 a plan view of a detachable part of the stem, and ;-Fig. 3 a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.

In the practice of my invent-ion, I provide a pipe at, of the class specified, comprising a bowl 6 having the usual stem 0 and mouth piece (Z, and in the form of construction shown, the stem 0 and mouth piece (Z are formed integrally, and the stem and mouthpiece are preferably tapered from the bowl to the outer end of the mouth piece. The mouth piece is provided with the usual longitudinal bore 6 and the bottom part of the stem and the bottom of the bowl member 6 is formed from a separate and detachable piece f in the top of which is a longitudinal chamber which extends beneath the bowl, and is placed in communication therewith by means of perforations or apertures it any desired number of which may be employed, and the part f is provided in the top surface thereof with a groove 2' which extends entirely around the chamber g and the top portion of the stem, over the part f, and the bottom of the bowl are provided with a corresponding rib j which fits in said groove, and said groove and rib facilitate the placing of the part 1 in an exact position and prevent its slipping on the bottom of the bowl and on the 'part of the stem in connection therewith, and also serve to render the chamber 9 tight and prevent the leakage of any liquid substance that might collect therein.

From the foregoing description and accompanying drawing it will be seen that when the part f is secured in place the chamber 9 is below the level of the bore 6 of the mouth piece (Z and also below the level of the chamber 70 of the bowl, and the rear end of the bore 6 of the mouth piece communicates with said chamber g, by means of a downwardly inclined extension e of said bore.

The part f is so formed, in cross section, that it completes the bottom of the bowl I) of the pipe, and completes the bottom of the stem 0, or that part thereof adjacent to the bowl, and said part of the stem and the part f thereof are preferably made rectangular in cross section, as shown in Fig. 3, and in practice the part f is first placed in position, as shown in Fig. 1, and bands or collars m and n are slipped on over the mouth piece and over the stem to hold the part f of the stem in position. The bands or collar m and n are held in place by friction, and in the use of the pipe, any spittle, or liquid substance from the mouth, will collect in the chamber 9, as will also any fine substance from the bowl of the pipe, and the part f of the stem may be detached whenever desired, for cleaning the stem and the mouth piece (Z thereof.

My invention is not limited to any particular shape of the stem, in cross section, nor to a mouth piece formed integrally with the stem, and changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described, may be made, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of my invention, or sacrificingits advantages.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A tobacco pipe provided with a stem having an integral mouth piece, that part of the stem adjacent to the bowl and the bottom of the bowl being composed of a separate detachable bottom part in the top of which is a longitudinal chamber with which the bore of the mouth piece communicates through a downwardly directed passage, said chamber being also in communication with the bowl of the pipe by means of vertical passages formed in the bottom of my invention I have signed my name in said bowl, and said detachable part being presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 10 provided in the top thereof With a groove 22nd day of August 1912.
