TUBE-SWAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1913.
Application filed July 22, 1911. Serial No. 639,903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. Sr. MARS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coleraine, in the county of Itasca and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tube-Swages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to swaging devices, and more particularly to devices for swaging the ends of tubes whereby the copper ferrules may be readily placed thereon.
The object of the invention is the provision of a simple and eiiicient device of this character which ma be placed beneath a steam hammer an operated rapidly to swage a number of pipe ends within a short period of time.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character embodyin separate die members which are adapte to be placed beneath and operated upon by a steam hammer and which, when released by the steam hammer, have means to automatically raise the upper die member so that the tube may be conveniently removed and another tube placed in position to be operated upon.
Further objects of the invention-will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this invention, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is a verticalsectional view. Fig. 4 is a similar view on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 and 2 represent respectively upper and lower die members each of which is provided with transverse recesses 3 and 4 gradually decreasing in size from the front to the back of the dies, and being constructed substantially in semi-circular cross sectional form so that when the die members are brought together the entire opening will be circular at all points throughout the width of the die members.
Secured to the back of the lower die member 1 is a plate 5 which slides over the upper die member 2, and covers both the openings or recesses in said die members, and forms a limiting plate for the end of the tube, so that when the tube is inserted in springs the die members it will abut against the plate 5 and thus beheld in operative position for the swaging operation.
In order that the members 1 and 2 may be properly guided one upon the other the upper die member is provided with vertical recesses 6 which are enlarged as at 7 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. These recesses are arranged upon opposite sides of the recesses 3 and 4, and are adapted to receiveguide pins 8 which are carried in the lower members in such position as to register with the recesses 6.

and which are adapted to be compressed by the action of the steam hammer when the latter is operated. This steam hammer has not been shown as it forms no portion of this invention.
In the operation of the device the die members are placed with the lower one resting upon the anvil of the steam hammer and the upper one 2 arranged within the path of the steam hammer so that as the same descends the member 2 is carried down until it rests upon the member 1. In the open position of the die members, the tube to be swaged is placed in the recesses 3 and 4 with its end lying against the limiting plate 5. The hammer is then operated and the die member Zcarried downwardly upon the die member 1. As the tube to be swaged is of substantially the same diameter as the diameter of the recesses 3 and 4 at their front ends, and as the rear end of the recesses adjacent the plate is greatly reduced, the tube will be consequently reduced, swaged, or crimped upon a taper as is readily understood.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, is:
