To alt whom it may concern Be it known that I, lViLLIAM D. LADY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jonesboro, in the county of lVashington and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit and Butter Kettles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to fruit and butter kettles and has for its object the production of an efficient kettle wherein the top may be either partially or wholly removed from the kettle without any great inconvenience.

Another object of this invention is the production of an efiicient means for holding the cover engaging clips in their correct po sition upon the kettle.

Still another object of this invention is the production of an efficient stirring paddle which may be easily detached from the operating handle.

lVith these and other objects in view. this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations. and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the drawings :-F igure 1 is a perspective view of the kettle. partly broken away to show the interior thereof. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective disclosing means for holding the top securing clips in engagement with the kettle. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view similar to Fig. 2 showing the clip removed therefrom. Fig. 41 is a detail perspective of a modified form of the means for securing the clips to the kettle. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view illustrating the means for connecting the operating handle to the paddle or stirring device. Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view of a modified form of the securing means for the operating handle to the top of the receptacle. Fig. 7 is a transverse sect-ion taken through the collar and means for holding the operating handle in engagement with the top. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective of the clamp for holding the handle in engagement with the top.

Referring to the drawings by numerals 1 designates the body of the receptacle which may be either made of copper or brass or any other suitable material which is provided upon the top thereof with a rolled beading 2 which beading is provided with a plurality of notches 3. Of course, the

usual reinforcing wire it passes through the heading and also passes entirely around the upper edge of the kettle. Cover engaging clips 5 are fixedly secured to the sides of the kettle by means of rivets G and are bent around the reinforcing wire a as illustrated at 7. These clips are provided with a cover engaging end 8 which is bent so as to extend in a plane at right angles to the mentioned portion thereof. This angle portion 8 is provided with an aperture 9 which is adapted to receive a securing hook 10 carried by the cover 11 of the receptacle or kettle. The top or cover 11 is reinforced by means of a substantially cross-shaped band 12 which constitutes a plurality of radial fingers 13. These fingers are provided near their outer ends with longitudinally extending slots 14% through which the angle ends 8 of the clips 5 pass. The securing hooks 10 are carried by the fingers or arms 13 for facilitating the holding of the top of the cable in engagement with the body 1. A number of steam outlet openings or apertures 15 are formed in the top of the cover as illustrated in Fig. 1.

A door 16 is hingedly secured to the top 11 as at 17. and a handle 18 is carried near the outer edge of the door so that access may be had to the interior of the receptacle without removing the entire cover therefrom.

A cover or journal member 19 is carried by the band 12 and the operating crank 20 has its stub shaft 21 journaled therein. The inner end of the stub shaft 21 is provided with a squared portion 22. This squared portion fits into the split apertured end 23 of the stirring shaft 24 and is held in its position by means of a clamping collar 25. The upper end of the shaft 24 is tapered as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5 for facilitating the clamping of the split end of said shaft 24 in engagement with the depending end 21 of the crank 20. It will therefore be obvious that the crank may be readily and easily detached from the shaft 24 and also that while the crank is firmly clamped therein the shaft 24: may be easily rotated. The shaft 24.- carries at its lower end a plurality of divergent plates 26 for assisting in stirring the material placed within the kettle.

In Fig. 6 I- have disclosed an embodiment of my invention. wherein the depending end 21 is provided with a plurality of reduced portions 27 for facilitating the adjustment of said crank to different heights. This adjustment is desired when it should be deemed advisable to regulate the distance of the bottom of the stirrer from the bottom of the'kettle. The collar 19 is provided with a socket portion 28 within which works the gripping collar 29. This collar is moved into and out of engagement with the depending end 21 of the crank by means of the thumb adjusting screw 30. It will be obvious that when it is so desired the collar 29 may be withdrawn from one of the reduced portions 27 of the depending end 21 and the crank slid within the collar 19 so that the collar. 29 will engage one of the other reduced portions for supporting the stirring device in an adjusted position.

In Fig. 4 I have illustrated an embodiment of the invention, wherein the cover engaging clips 5 are provided with a bulged portion 31 which fits over the bead portion 2 of the kettle thereby eliminating the notched portion 3 previously described and illustrated in Fig. 2. The upper end of the top engaging clip 5 is bent in a plane at right angles to the body of the top engaging clip 5 as illustrated by 32. Of course, the upper end 32 is provided with the usual aperture 33 for receiving the hooks 10.

From the foregoing description, it will be obvious that a very eflicient device has been produced wherein the stirring device may be easily detached from the crank 20 for allowing the stirring device to be removed from the kettle when so desired. It will be further obvious that a very eflicient and simple means has been produced for attaching the top of the kettle to the body thereof, and further that by having the top engaging clips secured to the body in the effective manner as illustrated and described, the top engaging clips will not be likely to become easily bent or accidentally detached from the body of the kettle.

hat is claimed is A device of the class described comprising a receptacle, said receptacle being provided with a rolled upper edge, a reinforcing band positioned within said rolled upper edge, said rolled upper edge being provided with a plurality of notched portions, top securing clips positioned within said notched portions, and being fixedly secured to said body, the side edges of said notched portions preventing the lateral movement of said clips upon said body, each of said clips being provided with a twisted end, a top carried by said receptacle, and means carried by said top for engaging said clips and holding said top upon said body.
