ARTHUR HALE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HEAD-COVERING PROVIDED WITH BAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application fiIed October 21, 1911.
Patented Jan. 21,1913.
Serial No. 658,068.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR Hana, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in HeadCoven ings Provided with Bands; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v
This invention relates to washable head gear, especially to hats and caps, and has for its object to produce an article of this character which will permit the stiffening members to be readily withdrawn, when the fabric out of which the head covering is made can be washed, and then the said stiflening members can readily be re-inserted.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed outin the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views :-Figure 1 is a sectional view of a banded cap or other head covering made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic plan view in section of the band portion of the cap shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. l, and looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the stiffening member removed from the cap; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view on a reduced scale of a modified form of stiffening member, which is especially useful in connection with caps having vizo-rs.
1 represents a cap or other head covering made of any suitable material, but preferably composed of a Washable fabric. The band portion of said cap is composed of an outer wall 2 and an inner wall 3 made of a suitable fabric stitched 01' otherwise secured together along their edges 18, as illustrated, to form a pocket 4. In the pocket 4 is an endless band 5 also made of a washable fabric, and which band need not necessarily be removed from the said pocket 4. The said band 5 is provided with a button, or other fastening means, 6 which is adapted to pass through a slit or button-hole 7 in the stiflening member or band 8, which is adapted to be inserted into and removed from the pocket 4:, as will now be disclosed. That is to say, the inner wall 3 is provided with a slit or other opening 9 through which the stiffening band 8 may enter, and in order to readily insert the said band into the pocket 41 and to remove it therefrom, I preferably move the button 6 to such a position that it comes opposite the opening 9, when the said button is inserted through the slit or button-hole 7 in the stiffening member 8, whereupon by pulling on the endless band 5, the said button-hole end of the member 8 is drawn into the pocket 4 and a continual pulling on the endless band 5 will thereupon draw the entire member 8 into the pocket 4 and substantially into the )position shown in Fig. 2, whereupon it serves as a stiffener for the band portion of the cap 1, and, of course, may be worn until the cap becomes soiled. The said stiffening member 8 is also preferably provided with a strip of flexible material 10 to serve as a handle portion, or means for the ready withdrawal of the member 8 when it is desired to wash the cap. This member 10 is preferably secured to the member 8 at a distance fro-m the extreme end thereof, as indicated in Fig. 4, and is adapted to fold around and over said end, indicated in Fig. 3, when the said member is in operative position in the pocket 4. By thus securing the handle portion 10 a slight distance away from the extreme end 11 of the member 8, the said end 11 is slightly curled over when withdrawing it from the pocket l, and thercupon its withdrawal is facilitated.
Accordingly when it is desired to wash the cap the strip 10 is seized by the fingers, the extreme end 11 is withdrawn through the opening or slit 9 and the entire stiffening member 8 gradually pulled out of the Pocket a, the endless band 5 in the meantime traveling around. the said pocket, until the said button 6 again comes opposite the opening 9, whereupon the member 8 is disengaged from the band 5 and the cap is ready for washing. After the cap is washed, dried and ironed, if desired, the button 6 is again inserted through the slit or button-hole 7, the member 8 re-inserted into the pocket f and the cap is again ready for use.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 5 a stiffening member of the shape of a vizor for a cap is shown, and the same is readily insertible through an opening leading to the vizor such as is fully disclosed in my co pending application, Serial No. 652,357, filed October 2, 1911, entitled Head coverings. In said application, however, the stiifening member for the vizor there illustrated is not provided with the flexible strip or handle portion which is illustrated in this application. Therefore, according to the present invention I provide the stifiening member 15 suitable for viZors with a flexible strip such as 10, and preferably secure the same to the underside of said stiffening member at a slight distance from the extreme tip 16 of said member.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction as well as the arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, therefore I do not wish to be limited to the above disclosure except as may be required by the claims.
What I claim is 1. A head covering provided with a band portion comprising inner and outer walls secured together along their top and bottom edges and provided with an open mouth pocket into which a stiifening member may be readily inserted and from which it may be. readily withdrawn, substantially as described.
2. A head covering provided with a band portion comprising closed inner and outer walls constituting a pocket provided with an open mouth; and a stiffening member located in said pocket capable of ready insertion into and withdrawal from said pocket, substantially as described.
3. A head covering provided with a band portion comprising inner and outer walls constituting a pocket provided with an open mouth; and means within said open mouth pocket for drawing a stifiening member thereinto.
a. A head covering provided with an open mouth pocket; and shiftable means confined in said pocket and provided with means for detachably engaging a stiffening member to draw the latter within said pocket.
5. A head covering provided with a band portion comprising closed inner and outer walls constituting a' pocket with an open mouth; an endless band in said pocket; a stiffening member located in said pocket capable of ready insertion into and with drawal from said pocket; and means for de tachably securing said stiffening member to said endless band, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR HALE.
