Be it known that I, SAMUEL VVEISS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usei'ul Improvements in Toys or Film-Bursters, of which the following is a specification.

I have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view, partially in section, showing my improved toy; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same provided with a paper supply or feed; and Fig. 3 is a seci tional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. As illustrated in these drawings, 4 indicates an annular ring within which closely fits a hollow body 5 having an outwardly eX- tending flange 6 around its upper open end, which flange is adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the ring 4. ably made integrally with the upper ring 8. The strip or handle member 16 is bent, as indicated, so that it passes down through the hole 12 in the strip 10, and has its outer end curved and bent to form a hand-hold 17 corresponding with the hand-hold 11. By making the upper and lower rings and the handle members in this manner, the entire device may be constructed of three pieces; and it apparent that by arranging the hinge in the position shown, the rings 1 and 8 will be pressed toward each other when the handle portions 11. and 17 are gripped tightly in the hand. The device may be used in this manner without any further attachments, but if desired, a spring 18 may be arranged in connection with the handle members, which spring tends to hold the handle members apart and the rings separated when in normal position, thereby enabling the paper to be readily slipped into position.

The use of the device as thus described will be readily understood from the drawings and the above description. The operator slips a piece of paper 7 between the flange 6 of the rubber or resilient hollow body 5 and the ring 8, and then presses the handles 11 and 17 together, thereby holding the paper tightly in position. Then, by striking the hollow body 5 suddenly against some relatively unyielding object, the air in the body is compressed, and as it seeks to escape through the opening 9, causes a loud report when the paper breaks. As the grip is lessened, the spring 18 tends to separate the rings so that the burst or ruptured piece of paper may be removed and another piece quickly inserted.

It will be noted that the parts going to make up the upper and lower rings and handle members may be readily stamped from sheet metal, and may therefore be rapidly and cheaply manufactured. It will also be noted that the rings or clamping members may be pressed closely together without the necessity of any latches or auxiliary devices.

In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the upper clamp ring 8 is provided with upwardly extending ears or lugs 19 for supporting a paper supply, as for instance a roll of paper 20, wound on a shaft 21, which may be supported in the lugs 19. The end of the paper is drawn through between the ring 8 and the upper flange of the hollow body, so that the operation may be rapidly repeated by simply pulling the paper through a short distance at each time it is operated. In this form of construction, the hollow body 22 is shown with a substantially semi-circular flange 23, which is adapted to fit over a correspondingly shaped ring 24, this arrangement being adapted to hold the ring and hollow body securely together and also provides a narrow surface against which the paper is pressed, thereby tending to form a still tighter closure between the paper and the hollow body. 1

By using a hollow body or collapsible member with an outwardly extending flange of the form shown in either Fig. l or Fig. 3 and with a corresponding holding ring, the hollow body may be quickly secured in place in the ring by inexperienced help, as all that is necessary is to press the hemispherical portion of the hollow body through the ring, and the friction between the sides, of the body and flange and the ring will hold the body in position.

Having thus described my invention, which, however, I do not wish to limit to the precise details of construction or arrangement of parts herein shown and described, except as set forth in the appended claims, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a toy or film burster, the combination of a pair of rings, handles engaging with said rings for pressing them toward each other, and a hollow collapsible body engaging with one of said rings, said body having an outwardly and downwardly extending flange engaging with the upper and outer sides of the ring with which it engages.

2. A hollow collapsible member for a toy or film bursting device, havin an out wardly extending semi-circular ange, substantially as shown and described.
