ROBERT O. BULLES, OF BLGOMING-TON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNGU 01T' SNE-HALF TO JGHN H. WOD, Gl? BLGOMINGTON, LLNOS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ROBERT O. Bottins, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Canes; and l do hereby declare the followingl to be a tull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in walking sticks or canes, and is especially designed as a noveltyy for use in political or other campaigns, and at other times during festive seasons of the year.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a walking stick with sound producing means such as a reed, a horn, or a whistle, which sound producing means is operated intermittently while the cane is being used in walking, and without any movement of the operator other than the natural movement ot' a person when using a cane while walking.
TWhile the invention is not restricted to the exact details illustrated and described, still for the purpose of disclosure reference is had to the accompanying drawings, illustrating a practical embodiment of the same, in which like numerals designate the same parts in the several views, and in which- Figure l is an elevation of a walking stick or cane with the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of same on an enlarged scale, and with the upper or hollow portion of the cane shown in longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a local fragment-ary view in longitudinal section, showing a slightly modified means for atlixing a collapsible ball to the cane, and Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3, and looking in the direction of the arrows.
l designates an ordinary walking stick, which is provided with means for producing sound when pressure is exerted longitudinally of said cane.
In the drawings, the sound producing means is shown at the top ot the cane and consists oi1` a tubular extension 2, riveted to' the cane as at 8, and provided with apertures 4, a flaring upper lip 5, and intermediate Specification of Letters Patent.

sound producing device indicated at 6. Surmounting this tubular extension, is an air containing collapsible member such as a rubber ball T, forming the head oi: the cane, and being provided with an aperture 8, adapted to be litted over and to seat beneath the tiaring lip 5. ln order to hold the ball firmly in this position, there is provided on the tube Q a movable member, comprising a concave, annular iiaring rim 9, adapted to be forced up against the rubber ball and hold its apertured portion tixedly in contact with the lip 5,
ln F ig. 2, a pin l0 is shown to indicate one means of securing the :flaring rim in position.
ln Figs. 3 and 4, a slightly modiiied form ot securing the ball on its seat is shown. In these views, the flaring rim 9 is mounted to move longitudinally of said tube and also rotatably therearound, and is provided with recesses 10a, coperating with lugs 11a on the tube 2, and forming a slip joint therebetween.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that means are provided for readily and securely iixing the ball on the tubular extension, and at the same time it will be seen that an article is produced whereby during the natural movements of walking, a downward pressure is exerted on the ball, which forces the air through the tubular extension, causing the sound producing means to operate as the air passes therethrough.
TWhat l claim isl. rlhe combination of a cane having a solid body portion and a tubular upper portion immovably mounted thereon, said tubular portion being provided with an. air outlet aperture near the solid portion ot the cane, a collapsible air containing member forming the head or handle of said cane, and sound-producing means located within said tube intermediate of said aperture and said collapsible member, substantially as described.
2. rlhe combination ot a cane terminating at its upper end in a tube and provided with an air outlet, a rubber ball surmounting said tube and forming the top or handle of said cane and having an opening therein communicating with said tube, and sound-producmg means n said tube intermediate of In testimony whereof, aX my signasad rubber ball and said ar outlet, the ture, in presence of two wltnesses. whole constructed and arranged without the use of a Spring to operate upon downward ROBERT O BOLLES' 5 pressure of the hand on said ball, during Vtnesses:
the natural use of said cane, to produce n- `WM. E. KLOPP, termttent sounds, substantially as described. l WM. P. BOLLES.
