ADJUSTMENT FOR, SIEVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1913.
Application filed. July 1, 1912. Serial No. 707,025.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Amos A. PETERSON, citizen of the United States, residing at Genoa, in the county of Nance and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Lnprowements in Adjustments for Sieves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to harvesting machinery and has special reference to an adjustment for sieves, grain pans, and shoes for such machinery.
One object of the invention is to provide a simultaneous adjustment for both ends of the device to which the improvement is applied.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby either end of the device may be independently adjusted.
With the above and other objects in view this invention consists in general of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and: Figure 1 is a perspec tive view of a sieve and a box therefor constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3-is a detail showing a certain operating lever. Fig. l is a detail showing a certain slide used in connection herewith. Fig. 5 is a detail showing a certain lock for one of the gears. Fig. 6 is a section through certain plates used with the device.
The box supporting the sieve is provided with a bottom 10 and sides 11. The sides 11 are preferably reinforced by strips 12 and at each end of the upper corners of each side there is provided a plate 18 wherein are slots 14 through which pass bolts 15 so that the plate is slidably mounted at its respective corners, and on this plate is also provided an outstanding rib 16 having a flange 17 projecting toward the end of the box adjacent which the plate is secured. Each of these flanges 17 is slotted as at 18 and bolts 19 are held in these slots and in similar slots 20 formed in alinement with the slots 18 but located in the base of the plate 13. These bolts furthermore pass through bolt holes 21 in a guard plate 22 which projects beyond the respective end of the box and is provlded with a vertically disposed slot 23.
The screen 24 is supported at each end on a shaft 25 the ends whereof pass through the slots 23. ,On each of these shafts 25 at each end thereof is a hand wheel 26 and in alinement with the respective flange 17 is a gear 27 which meshes with a rack 28 formed on the edge of the adjacent flange. By means of this feature of the invention by turning one of the hand wheels 26 in the proper d rection the gears 27 at that end of the device will move up and down the rack as the case may be, thus simultaneously adjusting both sides of that end. In order to lock the gears in adjusted position on each shaft ad jacent the respective gear is a sleeve 29 which carries an outwardly projecting arm 30 whereon is a finger 31 adapted to fit over the gear teeth when the sleeve is slid inward so that this finger jams between the gear and its rack, thus locking the device from movement downward.
On each of the braces 12 is located a bearing 30 wherethrough pass shafts 31, each of which is provided at each end with a gear 32 which meshes with a rack 33 formed on the rib 16 of each plate 18. 1 0n each shaft 31 there is further provided a ratchet 34: with which engages a pawl 35 braced firmly against the ratchet by a spring 86, the pawl being pivoted to the respective side wall 11. Straddling the ratchet 84; on each shaft- 31 is a yoke 87. This yoke has each of its arms provided with an elongated slot 38 wherethrough the shaft passes, and centrally disposed in the bight of the yoke is a tongue 89 adapted to engage between the teeth of the ratchet 34. To the yoke is fastened an operating handle 40 so that by forcing the tooth 89 between two of the ratchet teeth the handle may be turned with the consequence that the respective shaft will be revolved. By this means both of the plates 18 on either side may be raised or lowered simultaneously and held in the proper position by the spring pawl 35 on that side.
There has thus been provided a simple and elficient device of the kind described, and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the material principles thereof and it is therefore not wished to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new, is
1. In a device of the kind described, a casing, a shaft extending across each end of said casing, a screen supporting said shaft, means to simultaneously move both ends of said shaft in the same direction, and other means to move one end of each shaft simultaneously in the same direction.
2. In a device of the kind described, a casing provided with a bottom and sides, aplate slidably mounted at each upper corner of each side, a rack on each plate, a shaft extending across each end of said casing and provided with gears engaging said racks, a screen supported by said shafts, means to rotate said shafts and thereby cause the gears to travel on said racks, and other means to elevate the plates 011 each side of the casing simultaneously.
3. In a device of the kind described, a casing provided with a bottom and sides, a plate slidably mounted ateach upper corner of each side, a rack on each plate, a shaftextending acrosseach end of said casing and provided with gears engaging said racks, a screen supported by said shafts, meansto rotate said shafts and thereby cause the gears to travel on said racks, and other means to elevate the plates on each side of the casing simultaneously, the lastment-ioned means comprisinga shaft extending horizontally along each side of the easing, other racks on said plates, a gear at each end of the last-mentioned shafts engaging the last-mentioned racks, a ratchet on each of the last-mentioned shafts, and a lever engageable with each ratchet to rotate the shaft, said lever being mounted on the respective shaft.
4. In a device of the kind described, a casing provided with a bottom and sides, a plate slidably mounted at each upper corner of each side, a rack on each plate, a shaft extending across each end of said casing and provided with gears engaging said racks, a screen supported by said shafts, means to rotate said shafts and thereby cause the gears to travel on said racks, and other means to elevate the plates on each side of the casing simultaneously, the lastmentioned means comprising a shaft eX- tending horizontally along each side of the casing, other racks on said plates, a gear at each end of the last-mentioned shafts engaging the last-mentioned racks, a ratchet on each of the last-mentioned shafts, a vlever engageable with each ratchet to rotate the shaft, said lever being mounted on the respective shaft, and locking means for each of said shafts.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
