CATCH-BASIN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,374, dated June 12, 1883.

To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, THIEBEAUD GALLAT, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Catch-Basins, of which the following is a speciiication.

The object of my invention is to provide a means for reducing to small fragments the more intractable matters which clog catchbasins` and cess-poo1s in order to enable their more ready removal.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of a portion of a catch-basin embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a half ground plan and half vertical section ofthe same.

A may represent a part of the lioor, and B portions of the walls of a catch-basin.

C may represent a customary ventage or outlet in the floor of the basin.

D represents a valve, which in its lowest position closes the outlet C.

E are stanchions grouped in a circle, and serving to retain in place a turn-table, F, which is upheld by legs G, that are armed with cleavers H, which, when the tableF is partially rotated, act shearwise with similar cleavers, J, that project from the stan chions E. Other legs, l, of the table, on diametrically remote sides thereof, have vertical grooves j for shanks K of a bar, L, which. is fastened to the valve D. These shanks carry a plate, IWI, which is armed with teeth m, which partial rotation of the table F brings in antagonism with stationary teeth e, that project inward from the stanchions E, for the purpose of reducing coarse matters to small fragments.

The legs G I are secured at their lower eX- tremities to a false bottom, N, wheels O in which facilitate its rotation upon the basinfloor.

Depressions n in false bottom N facilitate the collection in front of the cleavers of such clogging objects as bottles, rocks, and the like. The shanks K, being extended upward through the turntable, as shown, are connected to levers P, whose heels, being depressed by arms Q, that project from shaft R, as shown in Fig. l, operate to lift the valve D. This action is brought about by a slight rotation of the shaft R. A further rotation of shaft R brings its arms Q against the studs S upon the turn-table F, and causes its greater or less rotation with the effects above noted.

Staples T on the turn-table serve to hold y down the ends of the arms Q upon shaft R. Rollers q q on the arms Q, facilitate thei r working.

I claim as new and of my inventionl. 'lhe combination, with a sewer catchbasin, of stanchions E, armed with cleavers J and the turntable F, armed with eleavers H, as and for the purpose set forth.
