To all whom it may concern: a
' Be it known that I, SonoMoN B. Faunas'rnm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and 6 State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Printing-Presses, of which the following is a s ecification.
ne of the objects of my invention is to produce a press for printlng cards or the 16 and accurately adjusted to suit various sizes of cards.
My invention also relates to other improvements in automatic printing presses hereinafter set forth.
I have herein illustrated the invention as embodied in a press adapted to print business cards, post-a1 cards or the like, but it will be apparent that certain features of the invention are applicable to other forms of printing" presses.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an automatic prlnting press embodying the features of my invention, with a portion of the base wall broken away. Fig. 2 is an end elevation. Fig. 3

The construction of the base will be hereinafter more fully described. 3 isthe frame or standard providing shaft supports, said frame comprising a standard 4 and four columns 5, the latter being bolted to ears 6 on the bed plate-2. The standard 4 carries the lower halves of the bearing 7 for a main shaft 8 and has on either side the two projecting arms 9 and 10 holding bearings for supporting their respective shafts 11 and 12.- The upper parts 13 of the frame 3 provide the upper halves of the bearings 7 of the shaft 8 and also a vertical bearing block 14 at the upper end. The drive shaft 8 extends through the frame 3, and supports at its outer end a fly Wheel 15. In this instance, a handle 16 is attached to said flywheel; however, other means may be used for driving the shaft-8. is an eccentric 17. On theopposite side of said frame 3 a crank 18 is attached to the shaft 8. A vertical plunger 19 operating within the bearing block 14 carries a cam yoke 20 and extends through the lower standard 4, being there inclosed in a second bearing 21. Said plunger supports at its lower end a form carrier 22. The upper end of the said plunger passing through the bearing block 14' is surrounded by a compresslon. spring 23, the upper end of said .spring bearing against a disk 24 attached to said plunger. A s ring casin 25 incloses the .entire upper en of said rive rod and is attached to the bearing block 14 by a cap screw 26 or other suitable means. The cam yoke 20 incloses a cam 27 fixed to the drive shaft 8 and is constructed so as to allow said cam to clear said yoke at all points except at the lower side. At this position a hardened steel'plate is fixed to said yoke by means of cap screws to receive the roller 28 of the cam. Rubber lugs 29 fixed to the upper side of said cam yoke cushion the shock as the drive rod is raised by the s ring 23. In this instance, the form car-- mar 22 at the lower end of the longer 23 is sufiiciently large to permit of prmting a postal card. It may be made, however, any size suitable to the machine. Supported in the bearings 30 and 31 of the base 1 is a rock shaft 32, provided at its outer end with a crank 33. Said crank is attached by means of the connecting rod 34 to the eccentric strap 35 on the eccentric 17. The base 1 consists of a casing having an enlarged base surface. The base is entirely open at the top and partly cut away at the ends. Bolted to the base 1 is the bed plate 2, said bed plate comprising a U-shape inking plate support 36 having bearings 37 and 38 therein for the ink plate 39 and for an ink fountain of suitable construction. The bed plate 2 is slotted directly below'the frame 3 so as to form the three strips 40, 41 and 42. The bed plate 2 is also provided with two slots 43 extending on either side of a strip 44 which connects the strip 42 and the rear rtion of the bed plate. A pad-holder 45 consisting of the plate 46 and the guide stri s 47 is attached to the bed plate at each side thereof by means of an angle plate 48, said angle plate oonsistin of a portion 49 overlying the edges of the d plate and provided with a set screw 50, hearing against said this instance, the guide strips 47 are adapted to slide between the guide pins 53 in the bed plate. 'Adjustably mounted upon the strip 44 of the bed plate,is avertical backing plate 59, said backing plate having a slotted tongue 60 extending along said strip. Within said slotted tongue are a guide pin 61 and a set screw 62, adapted to clamp said backing plate in position. Forward of the upwardly-extending plates 56 and extending acrossthe bed plate is a member 63.
The cards are stacked between the two upwardly extending side plates 55, the member 63 and the backing plate 59. It will be seen that to adjust the size of the magazine to suit the cards, the backing plate is moved forward or back by loosening the set screw 62, and the sides are adjusted by loosening the set screw 50 on the clamps 48 and sliding the pad holders toward or away from the center through the guide pins 53 to suit the length of the card. Graduations 64 are placed along the bed plate opposite the ends of the strips 54 to make the adjustment more convenient and accurate. The member 63 is provided with the two pins 65 extending therethrough. Fixed to the lower end of said pins and belowthe edge of said member is a gage strip 66. Attached to the upper ends of said pins is a block 67 in which a set screw 68 is inserted, said set screw bearing against said member. By turning the set screw, the block, pins and attached gage strip are raised or lowered to suit the thickness of the card. In this way only one card is allowed to escape from the magazine at a time, as will appear here- Attached to the shaft 12 of the frame 3 is an arm 69 actuated by means of a spring 70 coiled around said shaft. Attached to the outer end of said arm is a connecting rod 71, to the lower end of which is ivotally attached a follower 72 which is a apted to rest upon thecards stacked in the magazine. The follower 72 is provided with an opening 73 and about the spring casin 25 is a stri 74 supporting a hook 75. en the mac ine is not in operation, the follower 72 may be hung up by said hook, and the connecting rod 71 thereby kept out of the way.
Attached to the bed plate 2 by means of the supporting lugs 76 and 77 are two guide rods 78. Upon said guide rods a card-pushing member 79 is adapted to operate. Said member is reciprocated by the connecting rod 80 attached to the rock arm 81, the latter bein rigidly mounted on the rock shaft 32. he said card-pushing member consists of the main shoe 82 providedwith the-lugs 83 at the forward end extending through the slots 43 to the level of the upper face of the bed plate. The said lugs operate in the slots 43 in the bed plate and have steel clips 84 attached thereto by means of the cap screw; said clips are placed at a slight angle from the plane of the bed plate surface and have their forward edges projelcting slightly above the'level of said bed p ate.
As the main drive shaft 8 revolves, the eccentric and eccentric rod will rock the rock shaft 32, the shoe 82 operating through the connecting rod 80 and rock arm 81 Wlll travel backward and forward over the guide rods 78 and at every stroke push the bottom card in the magazine under the, gage strip 66 and out under the guides 57 onto the pad. The gage strip 66 is adjusted over the bed plate by means of the set screw 68 to allow only one card to pass under it at a time. At the end of the stroke, the card will be in position to receive an impression from the form within the form carrier.
Fixed to the bed plate at either side and extending over the guide strips 47 of the guide holders are the tracks 85, said tracks being provided with the lugs 86 at either end and the studs 87, said studs being between said lugs. Inclosing the said studs are the compression springs 88, which tend to raise the said track as far as the cap screws 89 in the lugs 86 will allow.
\Vithin the bearing 37 an ink plate 39 is rotatably supported. Said ink plate extends forward slightly between said tracks and is of the revolving type. A roller frame 90 provided, in this instance, with three rollers 91 is adapted to run upon the track 85 and upon the inking late 39. The extending shafts of the ro lers 91 rest upon the tracks 85, the frame 90 running on the Y inner side of said track. As the rollers 91 leave the inking plate they travel up on the tracks 85 and ink the form in the form carrier 22. Attached on either side of the roller frame 90 are the links 92 connecting the frame 90 to the rock arm 93 rigidly mounted on the shaft 11. A rocker arm 94.

In the base 1 are bearings for the rod 97 which extends out to a lug 98. The said lug is mounted on a guide rod 99 extending through the bearing 100 in the bed plate, and carries a pivotally hung pawl such as is commonly used to operate ink plates. A. collar 101 fixed on the rod 97 by means of a set screw 102 carries one end of a tension spring 103, said spring being secured to the base I at the other end. Fixed to the rock shaft 32 is a rocker arm 104 adapted to be adjusted on said shaft by means of the set screw 105. The rocker arm is so adjusted as to engage the rear end of the rod 97, as it swingsup with the said rock shaft.
A chute 136, preferably of sheet metal, is adapted by means of the parts 137 and 188 to beattached to the base 1, the part 137 being inserted over the edge of the base casting 1 and the upper end of the chute exstrip t0 of the bed plate in position to receive the cards after they have een printed, and are forced'ofi' the pad by the followingcards.
The operation of the machine is as follows: A stack of cards is inserted in the magazine and the follower 72placed u on the cards. By rotatingthe driving shad 8, the crank 18 operates the rock arm 94, driving the rollers 91 onto the tracks 85 and against the form. The eccentric 17 at the same time operates the rock shaft 32 to drive the shoe 79 forward on the guide rods 78, thus inserting a card beneath the guide strips 57 on the pad; as the rollers return, and the shoe travels back, the against the cam yoke 20, driving the form against the card resting upon the pad, and a as the cam releases the yoke the form carrier springs up. The rollers 91 again run onto the tracks 85 and against the raised cam 27 strikesform, the shoe 79 inserts another card between the guide strips, and the form again descends as the shoe recedes. Upon each rotation of the drive shaft, the ries the rocker arm 104 forward striking the rod 97 and driving the lug 98 back, the inking plate 39 being thus intermittently rotated through the medium of the pawl on the said lug 98. v

I claim as my invention: 1. In a printing press, in combination, a horizental bed plate having longltudmal slots therein, ejectors projectlng upwardly through said slots, a stationary vertical plate above said rock shaft car of my invention may be embodied in. machines of various deslgns and construcslots forming the front wall of j the card magazine, an adjustable rear wall for said magazine, and pad holders comprising plates slidable on said base plate toward and away from each other, the ends of said pad holders constituting the end walls for the card magazine.
