Application tiled Gctober 24, 1.911.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all, Uilm/n, 'it may confiera Be it known that l. ll'immar C. Briton Citizen ot the United States. residing at (,ireensboro. in tlu` county of Guilford and State of North Carolina^ have invented eertain new and usetul lmprovements in Hanksaws, of which the following is a speeiti 'z tion.
This invention relates to improvements in hack .saws and similar implements. and has for one ot its objeets to provide a simply constructed device whieh may be. readily adjusted to reeeive saws of various sizes and the trame adjusted to ehange the loration ot' the saw. A `With these and other objeets in view. the invention consists in eertain novel Atatures of construction as hereinat'ter shown and described. and then speeitieally pointed outin the claims. and in the drawings illustrative ot the preferred emlmdiment ot the invention: lFigure 1 is a side elevation ol the improved deviee; Fig. l is a plan view in section on the line Q-Q ot Fig. 1 bij. tl is a transverse seetion on the line SMS ot Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like to in the following; deseription and indieated in all the views ot the aeeompanyine drawings by the same reterenee ehzn'aeters.
Theimpr ved deviee comprises a trame, formed in two portions longitudinally adjustable to enable saws ot` various lengths to be employed and likewise provided with means Jfor adjustment to locate the saw nearer to or Yliarther trom the body ot the frame. The body ot the trame eomprises an intermediate member l() preferably formed ,trom metal platobentz into flat U- shape and extended laterally at one end in the form ot spaeed ears 11 through which a stop pin 12 extends. Rigidly seeured between the sides ot the intermediate member 1() at. the end opposite to the ears ll. is a terminal member 13 whieh is direeted at. right: angles to the member ttl as lshown at 14.4 Slidable wit-hin the, member 10 is another body member 15 havin;r a laterally directed extension 1G eorrespondinn` to the extension 14 ot the member llt. 'lhe body member 15 completely tlls the spare btL tween the, sides ot the internnaliate member 10 and is provided with a plurality ot notches 17 spared apart adapted to enegare One atl a time over the inner vside ot the pin parts are referred l The outer portion ot the member 10 1s cut away opposite the pin 1Q as indieated at 1S so that when the member 15 is released and turned at an angle to .the member 10. the space between the pin 1Q and the cutaway portion 18. will be suttieient to permit the removal or the adjustment of the member 15, but when the member 15 is arranged in longitudinal alinement with the intermediate member l() with its outer edge against. the inner side ot" the bend ot the member 10, one ot the notches 1T will engage over the pin 12 and thus lock the .member 15 from movement longitudinally ot the member '10. By this simple means nail)r ot' the member 10 to any extent within the range ot the notches 1T and without detaehingir any ot' the parts.
i\ t its outer end the downturned portion 1-t ot the trame is provided with a Clip deviee 19 Jformed ot a fiat U-shaped plate riveted to the opposite sides of the extension 1t and extending' outwardly therefrom and formingY a guide to reeeive an end member 90. Ati its bend the member 19 is formed with a small lip or proieetion 21 which is bent over between the sides of the member t9 and terms a stop lug whieh engr-ages in .one ot the series ot notehes in the member 90. 'lhe member 20 is slightly less in width than the soeket within the member lll so that when strain `removed t'rom the member Q0. itean be moved longitudinally ot the memberl ll. but will be loeked within the member ltl through the (oar-tion ot the lng Q1 and the notehes 2Q when strain is applied to the outer end ot the member 20.l
At f-lip deviee QS lsimilar to the elip devlee, ltl. eonneeted to the extension lt' ot the member 13 and provided with a lip lug 2l to engage in notehes 25 in an end member QG. The two end members 20 lo are preeiselv alike. and are provided respeetively at' their lower ends with soekets 2T-42%. rThe soeket 2S supports an adjusting pin .251 threaded at itsl outer end as shown al 510 and provided with a winer uut itl hearing; against thev outer Vtaee ot the sor-kel 2T. and with a pin 2)2 at its inner end. 'l`he soeket )Ssupports a rod t3 haring` a pin t at its inner end and a handle 313 at the outer end. 'the pins 3; Witt are designed to support, the .saw represwuted eonveutionally at 'vt. simple moans' il will be obvious that-wlnn by this,
the member 15 may be adjusted longitudii the parts are assembled, andthe wing nut 31 actuated, strain will be applied longitu dinally to the saw 36, and will likewise clamp the members 20-26 firmly against the stop lugs 21-24, and also firmly clamp the T#embers 15-1O toget-her through the a: fn of the stop pin 12. By this arrange- .nent also it will be obvious that the members 20-25 may be adjusted relative to the body o' thefralne to dispose the saw 3G nearer to or farther from the member 10, and *thus increase or decrease the space between the saiv and the frame and adapt it to various uses or various sizes or forms of the material. It will also be obvious that by adjusting the body members l015 that sawsof various lengths may be connected to the frame.
'Ivhe improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured, and formed Wholly of plate 'metal preferably steel and pres: 1d and stamped into the required shape, and does not require the employment of expensive -Y machinery to manufacturethe parts.
Having thus described t-he invention, what is claimed as new is: n
l. A hack saw frame comprising an intermediate vhotly formed ofncoacting longitudinally adjustable members, end members movably connected respectively to the body members, a savv carried by said end mem-v bers, means for applying strain longitudinally to said saw, and locking means carried by said body members and engaging said end members and rendered operative by the strain applied to the saw.
2. A hack saw frame comprising an intermediate body formed of coacting longitudinally adjustable members having the end portions directed at right angles thereto, clips engaging the end portions, end members slidable through said clips, a saw carried by said end members, means for applying strain longitudinally to said saw, locking means carried by said body inembers, and locking means carried by said clips and end portions', said locking means being rendered operative by the strain applied to the saw.
3. A hack saw frame comprising an intermediate body formed from a plate bent upon itself longitudinally to form spaced sides, a laterally directed terminal connected to said body at one end, another body member slidable between the sides of the intermediate body and having a laterally directed terminal, end members movable relative to said body terminals, a saw carried by' said end members, means for applying strain longitudinally to said saw, locking means carried by said body members, and locking means carried by said end members, said locking means being rendered operative When strain is applied to the saw.
LA hack saw frame. comprising an intermediate body formed from a plate bent upon itself longitudinallyv to form spaced sides with the sides extended at one end, a pin extending through the extended portions of the sides, a laterally directed terminal connected `to said body at one end, another body member slidable between the sides of the intermediate body and having a laterally directed terminal and notches for engaging one at a time over the pin, a saw supported from said terminals, and means for applying strain longitudinally to said saw. f
5. A hack saw frame comprising an intermediate body formed ot' (3o-acting longitudinali-y adjustable members having laterally adjustable terminals', 'straps embracing said terminals and forming sockets, each socket having an inwardly directed stop, an
end member slidable in each of said sockets and having notches engaging one at a time t with the stops, a saur carried by said end members, and means for applying strain longitudinally to said saw.
In testimony whereof lf affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLTAM C. BURGE.
