To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JOHN DonnnLLY, a citizen of the United States, resldlng at Branford, in the county of New Haven,
State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Hacksaw-Frame; and I do hereby declare the followin to be a full, clear,
' and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
This invention relates to an improved hack-saw frame.
An 'aim of this invention is to provide a hack-saw frame involving simple, efiicient and practical features of construction, and advantages over the hack-saw frame set forth, illustrated and claimed in'the application of John Donnelly' filed August 28, 1917, Serial No. 188,664 and allowedSept. 27, 1917, and which has matured into patent dated 5th day of March, 1918, Patent No.

Consequently a further object of the invention. is the provision of means for overcoming these disadvantages, and at the same "time holding the end piece of the frame in position, when once having been adjusted. Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates the hack saw frame, which in appearance resembles the general shape of frame of this kind. The frame comprises a bar bent or curved at 2, to form the back 3 and the inclined end piece 4 of the'frame. The end of the inclined piece 4 terminates in a lug 5 passing through a plate 6, and is 5 battered or mashed as shown at 7, whereby the plate 6 is riveted to the end piece 4. This plate has a rectangular opening 8. A saw blade connecting and tightening member 9 rectangular in cross section engages and fits 1n the openmg 8, whereby the same is prevented from turning. Although the member 9 is rectangular in cross section substantially it is provided with threads 10, which are engaged by the interior threads of the cylindrical bore of the sleeve or thimble 11, which is frictionally fitted in the hollow bore 12 of the handle" 13, so that by adjusting the handle the tightening and connecting 'member may be adjusted through'the opening 8,-fort1ghtening the saw blade 14. A' ferrule 15 is frictionallyfitted on the end'of the handle, that is adjacent the plate 6,thereby preventing splitting of the handle. The
tightening and connecting member'9 has an I extensionvl6,the end portion of which has an angular cutaway portion 17, andextending transversely ofthe extremity of the extension 16 is a pin. This pin is frictionally This loop constructed from a single length of spring wire, the ends 23 and 21 of which extend toward each other, and are offset in parallelism. One end 23 fits the opening or aperture 21, thereby pivotally mounting the loop, while the end portion 24 engages the crotch 25 of said cutaway portion 17. Since the endportions are offset, as shown, the
sides of the loop 22 are of different lengths, and owing to this particular construction the loop 22 has a spring action. The loop end 26 engages over the lug 1 9and contacts with the saw blade, and holds the same securely connected to the extension detachably. The frame has an end piece 27, which is constructedU-sha'ped in cross section, consequently made of sheet metal.- 1 One end of the end piece 27 is provided with upstanding ears 28, which form integral parts of'the upper ends of the side'pieces of said end piece 27 and between which ears the back bar 3 of the hack-saw frame passes. The back 3 of the frame engages the shoulder 29 where the sheet metal end piece is bent upon itself,while the opposite edgeof the back 3 engages the pin 30, which extends transversely of the ends of the ears28'.- It is to be noted that the shoulder 29 and the transverse pin 30 are oifsetfrom each other ;so as to limit the end piece 27 in its angular position. However, since the shoulder 29 and the transverse pin 30 are offset in the manner illustrated, the back 3 is capable of movement between the'shoulder and the pin 30, by first tilting the end piece 27 in the direction .of the arrow a. For example after tilting the end piece as previously stated, but against the'action; of the spring 31 (which holds the shoulder in contact with the back 3) the back 3 may be moved between the pin 30and thQJShOUlClQlTQQ. The spring 31 is located in the channel 32 between the'sides of the end piece 27. This spring is coiled about the transverse pin 33, and is bent at 31 to engage one edge'of the back 3, while the portion 35 of the spring engages the crotch of the channel" and holds the shoulder 29 against the back 3. The
other end of the end piece 27 hasan opening 36 in the transversed curved portion ofysaid end piece 27 to receive the saw connecting The opposite wallsof the U- depressions 38, which conform to' and receive the 'connecting memiber 37, so to hold the connecting member 37 axially alined with the sawblade. The connectingmember 37 has an jangulan cutaway portion 39,
and projecting from the flat-face of the cutaway portion is a forwardly inclined lug 40, to engage the aperture 4-1 of the forward end of the saw-blade: 14. The lug 40 extends angularly forwardly, so as to prevent detachment of the blade. The lower ends of the forward edges of the sides of the end piece 27 have notches 12. One end of the connecting piece 27 is provided with transverse pins 43 and 14 extending at right angles to each other. To hold the saw blade 14 as illustrated, in a plane parallel with the back 3, the ends of the pin are designed to engage the notches 42. In order to hold the blade 14 in a plane at right angles to the back 3, the ends of the pin 4C3 may engage the notches 42 To arrange the saw blade in a plane at right angles to the back 3, the connecting inen'1ber 9 may be adjusted in the direction of the handle, until the annular groove 45 of the colmecting member 9 registers with the rectangular opening 8, then the connecting member 9 may be given a partial or in fact .a quarter turn, which will dispose the flat tor having a transverse aperture and a cutaway portion, a spring loop having long and short arms, the longer arm having a lateral extension engag ng said aperture plvotally mounting said loop, the shorter arm having a lateral part engaging the crotch of the cutaway portion'providing spring action for the loop. 3
