SUPPORT FOR SYVINGING SEATS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. (loosen, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for Swinging Seats; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in supports for swinging seats.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a support of the character indicated which is exceedingly simple and durable in construction and not liable to get out of order.
lVit-h these objects in view, this invention consists in certain structural features and combinations and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, pointed out in the claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the said drawings Figure 1 is a side view of a support embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 22, Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 33, Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. i is a section on line H, Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the flanged side of a portion of the stationary bracket of my improved support. Fig. 6 is an elevation of the roller-bearing side of a portion of the swinging section of my improved support. Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are drawn on a larger scale than Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates a stationary cast metal bracket which is provided at one side with a latera ly facing segmentally spherical integrallug a which forms a bearing as will hereinafter appear, and the said bracket is also provided at the said side with an annular flange 10 which extends circumferentially ofthe said lug or bearing. The flange 10 has an inwardly facing surface 12 which extends circumferentially of the upper portion of the lug or bearing a. The flange 10 also has two inwardly facing surfaces 13 and 13 which extend circumferentially of the lug or bearing a and in the direction of and gradually ap- Speeification of Letters Patent.

preach the said lug or bearing from and beyond opposite ends respectively of the aforesaid surface 12. The surfaces 12 and 13 are suitably spaced from end to end thereof from the lug or bearing a.
To render the construction simple and durable the bracket A is composed of a single casting, and the lug a is a member of the said casting.
B represents the swinging section of my improved support. The said section B is instrumental in supporting a seat (not shown) and overlaps the flanged side of the bracket A. The said section B is rotatably mounted on the lug or bearing a of the bracket A and arranged to swing in a vertical plane on the said lug or bearing, and preferably the said section B is provided at its bracket-facing side with a segmentally spherical cavity 6 which is engaged by the said lug or bearing.
The swinging section B is provided at its bracket-facing and cavited side with an in tegral lug 15 which projects laterally of the said side of the said section and has such arrangement relative to the axis of the said section that the said lug is arranged above,
the said axis in any position of the said section. The lug 15 is provided with a seat 16 for a loose roller D, which seat is formed in the said lug and extends circiunferentially of the lower portion of the rollerand there by prevents lateral displacement of the roller. The seat 16 is obviously arranged above the axis of the swinging section B in any position of the said section. The roller D, thus seated in the said lug 15, is substan tially parallel with the axis of the swinging section B.
The surface 12 of the flange 10 is arranged to prevent displacement of the roller D from the seat 16 during the swinging of the rotary section B from the one to the other of its extreme positions but spaced far enough from the lug or bearing a to prevent the said surface clamping or bearing against the roller during the said actuation of the said section, but the surfaces 13 and 13 of the aforesaid flange are arranged to frictionally engage the roller during the swinging of the said section in opposite directions respectively and preferably have such arrangement relative to the roller that the one or the other of the last-mentioned surfaces clamps the roller against the seat 16 accordl or o't ih said casting.
The roller D extends at one end into close proximity to the bracket and at its other nd into close proximity to the swinging; st tion is beveled circiinitterentially at its ends" as at (/1, to render the flSiiHQfS coniposingr the bracket L and the swinging section 72% snitahle tor the use of the roller without any milling or machining of the said castings at the ends of the roller. roller it), having); a will in The large wearing surface, t groove the surfaces 13 ot' the flange e bracket it during; the movements 'ingj section preventing displacement of K section B laterally from the bracket it are provided and comprise a bolt i and a nut 0 (see Figs. 1 and The belt E is arrangel suitable distance below and parallel with the axis of the swinging section The bolt it has its head arranged at the outer side of the bracket A and has its shank extei'iding loosely through a bolthole 1? which is formed in and extends laterally through the said bracket below the lug or hearing a. the shank of the bolt E extends late ally through a slot. 18 formed in the swinging FQCii H]. B, which slot extends circunrteientially of and is arranged eoncei'itrically relatire to the {KB of the said sectioin and the said slot is long enough to accommodate the location of the bolt durinc; the swinging of the said section.
'lhe shank of the bolt extends not only through lint a suitable distance beyond the outer side of the swinging); section l3, and the nut e is screwed onto the said shank at and s iaced from the said side of the said sectioin and t washer G is interposed between the said. nut and the said section.
The washer G is prorided with a lag g which engages the swinging section B at a and swinging section iii are held properly assembled without nit entering with the movement of the swinging;' section.
l'l 'hat I claim is In a support for a swinging seat, the combination, with a stationary cast metal ln'acket norided at one side with a late ally facing secnnentally spherical bearing and a flange extending circuintercntialiy of said hearing, which flange has an inwardly tacint: surilace eittendingjz circuinterentially of the upper portion. of said bearing said flange also having two inwardly facing snrtaces which extend cireuinterentially oil and toward said bearing from and beyond opposite ends of the iirstanentioned. surface, and a swinging cast metal section rotatably mounted on said bearing and arranged to swing; in a Yertical plane, said swinging section ta he bracket and provided at its bracket-i cine side with a lug of a loose roller sated in said ling; which roller is substantially parallel with the axis of the swinging; section and. beveled circumferentially at its ends and extends at one end into close proximity to the SWil'lQ'i section and at: its other end into close pro inity to the bracket said roller being clamped to said. lug by the one or the other of the aforesaid UBPODtl-TUQHl'lmlfifl sn faces according as the swinging section has been swunginto the one or the other ot its extreme positions, the first-1nentioned surface oi? the aforesaid flange being; spaced tar enough from the aforesaid barring: o prevent clamping of the roller by said surface during the 1110K- inent ot the swinging; section.
in testimony whereof, 1 sign the foregoing specification, in the presence of two wit- DOCSQS.
