UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE.
JAMES 'A. HORTON, OF READING, MASSACHUSETTS.
POWER'- PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,158, dated April 12, 1887.
Application filed July 15, 1886. Serial No. 208,105. (No model.)
.To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMEs A. HoE'roN, of Reading, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Power-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to power-presses, and has for its object to provide improved means for adjusting the bed vertically, whereby it can be raised or lowered with certainty and great nicety to any degree or extent, 4and effectively secured in any position to which it may be adj usted.
The 4invention also has for its object to improve the means whereby the plunger is raised and lowered.
To the foregoing ends the invent-ion consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim, so that others skilled in the art may be able to make and use the same, the accompanying drawings forming a part of this 'specicatiom and the invention being set forth with distinctness and particularity at the end of the description of the construction and operation of the machine.
Of the drawings, Figure l represents a side elevation of the entire machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical sect-ion through the upper portion thereof. Fig. 3 is across-section on the line x of Fig. l, looking down'upon the bed of the machine. Fig. 4. is a sectional detail view on the line y y, Fig. 1. j
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all of the figures.
ln the drawings, a represents the frame of the machine, consisting of asubstantial pillar or pest adapted to support the various parts of the contrivance.
b represents the bed, constructed to be guided in its vertical movements in a guideway, V- shaped in horizontal cross-section, (see Fig. 3,) formed in the frame, and to be supported therein by means of a rod, c, sustained vertically in the m chine and having a screwthreaded connect on with the bed, as shown in Fig. 2, and by\rods or bolts d. passing horizontally through ve al slots c, 'formed in the sides of the V-shaped g eway and at the vertex thereof in the frame. aid
bolts d have also a screw-threaded connection with the bed, and their outer ends, f, are
headed and adapted to have a key or crank applied thereto, and be turned up so as to effectually clamp or lock the bed in any position to which it may be adj usted by means of the vertical rod c.
The upper end of rod c extends through a portion of the'frame into'an opening, g, formed therein, Where said rod is provided with a bevel-gear, 7L, rigidly secured thereto, thelower face of which rests upon the fioor ofthe opening g. A bracket, t', is secured to the side of the frame near opening g, to the outer end of which is secured a stud, j, forming a journal for a bevel-gear, fr, constructed and arranged to mesh With bevel-gear h on the upper end of rod c. Gear-wheel l.: is rigidly secured to its stud j, and the latter is adapted to be turned in its bearings in the bracket The outer end of study', like the outer ends of rods d, is squared, so as to have a key or crank, l, applied thereto for the purpose of revolving gear lr, which in turn revolves gear h on shaft or rod c, Wherebyfwhen the bed is free from the clamping influence of rods d, it may be raised or lowered, as will be understood without further description.
When the bed is adjusted in proper position in the manner described, which adjustment can be iliade with the utmost nicety, the key or crank Z may be removed from stud j and applied to the square heads f of rods d, and the latter turned up so as to clamp the bed securely in position in its guideWay on the frame a. The rods Yor bolts d, being arranged at the sides of the V-shaped guideway and at the vertex thereof, provide a construction by which the bed can be clamped very rmly in position, and constitute an important feature of my invention.
m represents the main shaft, supported in a bearing formed in .the frame, to the rear end of which shaft the driving-pulley n is secured in any suitable way. The forward portion of shaft m is turned down, so as toleave a pin, o, thereon at a point eccentric with the axis of rotation of the shaft. A portion of the shaft m on its extreme forward end is left undisturbed, so as to practically form a disk, p, on the forward end of pin o, making the shaft m, vpin o, and disk p integral parts of each other,

so that they cannot. readily become loosened the latter being effected by the operation of to be moved and guided in Ways formed inthe l frame a abovethe bed b. The plunger is counterbored in its upper portion, as represented in Figs. 2 and 4 and in dotted lines in Fig. l, to receive a portion of the lower rounded head or end, r, of pitlnan s, a journal-box, t, being formed on the upper end of the pitmamwhieh journal-box is adapted to be secured to journal-pin o, so that the latter may turn therein in any suitable or Well-known Way.
A cap, yu, counterbored so as to receive the portion of the lower rounded end of pitman s, (not inclosed in the counterbore formed in the plunger,) is constructed to lit over saidlower end of the pitmau and to be secured to the plunger by means of dowel-pins @,formed on or secured in the cap and fit-ting into suitable holes formed in the plunger, as represented in Fig. 4.' A bolt, w, passes through the cap, the lower end of the pitinan, and the side ot' the bed, and is secured to the latter, the construction and arrangement being such that the pit-man may turn Afreely on said bolt and the latter have a nut screwed on its outer forward end, by which the cap,wth its doivelpins, may be held secu rely in place on the plunger. A short slot, y, is formed in the upper part of the inclosure constituted by the counterbores in the plunger and the cap fu, which permits the shaft of the pitman s to play therein in the operation of the press.
The construction described is designed to secure strength in the several parts and steadiness and exactness of motion in the operation of the press, as well as simplicity in their form and arrangement.
In the revolution of shaft m, journal-pino, operating as an eccentric or crank on the upper end of pitlnan .,Will through the latter device raise and lower plunger q, the lifting of rounded head 1' on plungerq and cap u in the described counterbores in which it is titted, and the pressure on the plunger is effected by the pressureofthelower end ofthe pitman thereon, as will be understood. By this construction pin w is practically relieved of all strain, excepting such as is required to keep the cap u in place.
Theguideivay for the bed formed in the frame is preferably ot' triangular or V form, and the adjacent portion of the bed is of corresponding form, as represented in Fig. 3, this construction being dcsigned to take up the wear of the parts and secure a close junction or wedging iit thereof, and consequently the secure clamping together of the same.
The full and dotted lines in Fig. l, representing the bed and its adjuncts, show the extent to which the bed may be adjusted.
