Description

EBEN MOODY BOYNTON, or weer NEWBURY, MASSACHUSETTS. y
Letters Patent No. 105,032, dated July 5, 18'470.
mPRovEM-NTIN SAW-FRAMES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all 'whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EBEN MOODY BOYNTON, of West Newbury, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements .in Saw-Frames, of which the following .is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawmg.
My invention relates to what are known as bucksaws,'and consists in a novel construction ofthe frame, by the use of braces for rendering it rigid,`inconnecltion with a short bolt with a hook on one endfor attachment to the saw-blade, and a thumb-nut on the opposite end for tightening or stilie'ning the` whole, as hereinafter explained.
In the drawing- Figure lis a plan view of a buck-saw, with the braces for rendering the frame rigid.
Figure 2 is a cross-secti0n, showing the method of tightening or sti'ening the whole.
Asis well-kno\vn, the frames 0f buck-saws are 0rdinarily .so constructed that they stien the vsawblade by having the upper ends of the sides drawn toget-her.
My object is to'accomplish the same result in a more expeditious and convenient manner, by a novel construction of the frame, in connection with a peculiar method ofati'aching and adjusting the saw-blade.
This I do by making a saw-frame, A, of the sidepieces B C and the cross-pieces D E, arranged as clearly shown in g. 1, and then rendering the whole rigid by means of' corner braces F and G, firmly secured in place, as shown in the same figure.
The saw-blade H, I pivot at its front endin the lower end of the front side B of the frame, and to its opposite or rear end hook a short bolt or tang, I,whic h 'is passed through a slot in the side piece C ofthe frame, and secured vthelrby means 'of a thumb or setnut, J, all as clearly shown in Afigs. l and 2.
As will be readily seen, the saw can at once,.hysin1 ply turning'the thumb-nut, be stiffened, by heilig drawn as tight as desired, the frame being so rigid as not to give any.
vHaving thus described my invention,
1. A rigid frame for buck or similar saws, vconsisting 'of the side pieces B C, cross-.pieces D E, and braces F G, when constructed and arranged substantially as herein described.
-2. 4The combination of the rigid saw-frame A with saw-blade H, tang I, and thumb-nnt J, when' constructed and arranged substantially as herein dcscribed.
EBEN MOODY BOYNTON. Witnesses WM. B. MORRILL,l It. A. TYLER.
