Description

. N. PETERS. PHOTO-UTNOGRAPNER. WASHINGTON. D C.
tnite tant stent' Gettin.
Letters Patent No. 92,767, dated July 20, 1869.
IMPRVEMENT IN SAW-FRAMES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern? Be it known that I, ABEL XVHITLOGK, of Danbury, in the county of Fairfield, in the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved Saw-Frame; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference `being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of refe-rence marked thereon. `\--\J The nature of my invention consists in providing my saw-trame with a hinge and tension-arms. l By my hinge I easily adjust the frame to receive saws of various sizes.
My tension-arms acting with the movement of the hinge, the pivot of the hinge becomes their fulcrum.
By the combined action of the hinge and tensionarms, I am able to dispense with the brace used in the common saw-frame, and the long tension-rod.
To enable others skilled in the art to make'and to use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my saw-frame of" cast-iron, although it may be made of other materials.
I cast the saw-frame in two pieces, each piece having a Vcavity to receive the ends of thesaw-blade, and
each piece having a part of the hinge; the cavity being near one extreme, and the hinge near the other extreme of the pieces, and each piece having a tensionarm extending from near the hinge outward.
The tension-arms, when combined, answer also the purpose of one of the handles; -the other handle being an extension on one piece below the cavity.
I attach the two parts by a suitable bolt or rivet through the hinge.
I attach the saw by bolts, rivets, or screws, and by means of a suitable bolt passing through the tensionarms, I adjust the tension of the saw.
When the parts of my frame and saw are all combined, it gives tothe frame the appearance of au arch outward from the saw.
In most saw-frames in use, there is a brace-rod or stretcher ruiming from one part tothe other, parallel to the saw, intermediate between the saw and the other extremes of the parts. This, brace or stretcher is in the way, and proves aniuconvenient obstruction when needful to saw deep cuts through thick sticks.V
In my saw-frame my hinge and tension-arms overcome any need of such braceaod or stretcher, hence any obstruction from it.
K K', of the accompanying drawings, lshow the tension-arms, with a bolt, with screw on which the nut turns, for tension.

E F is a transverse cut through the cavity receiving the ends of the saw-blade.
c l show a transverse 'cut through the saw-frame.
